Elounda Gulf Villas & Suites on the Greek Island of Crete has just delivered one of the best family holidays I’ve ever had, and there have been a few!
Our choice of Greece was simple; an easy four hour flight, hot sunshine guaranteed daily at this time of year and consistent blue sky, family friendly locals and fresh healthy food. We were feeling good about our choice of summer break.
Then we arrived at the family-owned and run Elounda Gulf Villas & Suites itself – located up on a hillside just a few minutes outside of the small fishing village of Elounda (45 minutes from Heraklion Airport) with views out over the Gulf of Mirabello.
Our spacious villa created a problem that we didn’t expect – the difficult decision to spend our day relaxing in our beautiful private haven or whether to explore and enjoy the beautiful resort facilities and nearby Elounda?
It boasted gorgeous views of blue sea and sky, had its own infinity-edge pool with Jacuzzi, fully equipped kitchen and stocked mini-bar and welcome pack, as well as all mod cons including 3D TV and DVD’s for those moments we wanted to get out of the heat of the day, chillax and catch up on the movies we never seem to have time to watch at the cinema at home! So staying in was an easy option.
However, not wanting to miss out on Crete and the resort, we mixed it up – spending the mornings in our villa and on several days venturing to the main pool in the afternoon; as it was summer school holidays there were other playmates readily available for my 8-year-old daughter. Other days we opted for car hire and explored the island and nearby pretty villages and harbours including Elounda itself and quaint little Plakias.
Although not on a beach, Elounda Gulf Villas does not fail to deliver on this for its guests, with a private beach club just a 10 minute drive away and complimentary private taxi to escort you there and back on demand. The Beach Club offers comfy sun beds and day chairs, an attendant to manage your food and drinks orders and even providing complimentary jelly shoes (it’s quite pebbly, so they make for a more comfortable journey in and out of the sea) and beach toys for children – all those small details thought of for you.
I did comment to my husband that location, accommodation, views, décor and cuisine was all excellent but the magic ingredient that made this a really potent holiday for me, was the staff and the service they delivered – with their genuine warmth, attention to detail and professionalism they simply made it so easy to be on holiday. The best way to describe a family holiday at Elounda Gulf Villas & Suites is as if you have been invited as a VIP guest to stay a someone’s luxurious private home and the only brief is you can have whatever you want, whenever you want it. Will we return? Most definitely!
