I recently travelled to Hermitage Bay, a stunning boutique-style resort on Antigua’s west coast, and after few days enjoying their all-inclusive luxury I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving! From freshly mixed cocktails on the beach to superb fine dining at every meal, a stay at Hermitage Bay feels truly indulgent and the spectacular setting will have you whipping out your camera every five minutes.
As soon as I arrived at Hermitage Bay I was struck not only by the lush, landscaped grounds and tranquil ambience, but also by the welcoming and friendly staff. This ultra-luxurious resort is the epitome of Caribbean beauty, with a private golden sand beach edged with palm trees that surround crystal, clear waters. We were warmly greeted with delicious cocktails in the poolside bar – a taste of what was to come on our all-inclusive getaway – and a feeling of relaxation washed over us.
Once fully refreshed we were taken to our superb Garden Suite, boasting a four poster bed, dark hardwood floors and a verandah with a dual aspect sea view. A chilled bottle of champagne waited for us in the living area, and we instantly felt at home.
In total the resort has just 30 luxury suites – comprised of the four Garden Suites, nine Beachfront Cottage Suites and 17 Hillside Pool Suites. Each of these options boast spectacular sea views, with those on the hillside commanding the best views of Hermitage Bay and also nearby Jolly Harbour. For those staying on the hillside, suites come with private plunge pools; you needn’t worry about the climb up either, as the resort is more than happy to drive you directly to your suite on request – something very welcome after a day of cocktails and three-course dining!
Dining at Hermitage Bay was a truly world-class experience, and you can tell that their Executive Chef, Desroy Spence, takes great pride in serving exceptional Caribbean and European dishes with an emphasis on local, organic ingredients – many of which are from Hermitage Bay’s very own onsite organic garden. There are also cooking classes every Wednesday for those wanting to bring home a slice of the Caribbean’s culinary treasures. The restaurant enjoys a beachside position and all tables have a superb sea view, making every meal a special occasion. Dinner is accompanied by different live music each night, and after dinner I could often be found enjoying a few cocktails and a dance in the bar! Not only does the cuisine vary each night, but it is also some of the best food that we had in Antigua. We enjoyed so many dishes here, but in particular I would recommend the mahi-mahi. This truly is a foodie’s paradise.
The drinks at Hermitage Bay are divine – and even better, they are all included. From mouth-watering cocktails on the beach to the delicious selection of wines in the restaurant, it really is hard not to enjoy yourself thoroughly! A personal favourite was the ‘Hermitage Gold’ cocktail which was a refreshing mix of pineapple, passion fruit, fresh mint, gold rum and champagne – a great way to toast the sunset.
For those who want to indulge but keep fit, there is an onsite gym available to all guests, as well as yoga and pilates on the hillside with views overlooking the bay. The beach is also a fantastic place to go for a long walk or run, with the surrounding hills perfect for running enthusiasts. My personal favourite activity was swimming in the gorgeous blue waters here. There are coral reefs close to the shore and the team at the hotel can take you out to other secret snorkelling spots, where you can spot angelfish, turtles, rays and much more.
Relaxing In Style
For those who simply want to relax, the beach or pool are the perfect places to enjoy the blue water and golden sunshine. The friendly staff will show you to the perfect lounger in a secluded spot and a bucket of ice water appears right away. From your lounger, simply place a wooden red flag in the sand and your favourite cocktails will be brought straight to you. Hermitage Bay also boasts an award-winning spa that focuses its treatments on chakra-based therapies as well as traditional massages, so there is no choice but to relax during your stay.
With its romantic setting and panoramic views of the sunset, Hermitage Bay is ideal for couples looking for a spectacular, luxury getaway. From private dinners on the beach to massages for couples, there is plenty on offer to make a stay here one to remember.
