At 2,000 metres above sea level, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar is the highest five-star hotel you’ll find in the Middle East, and its location is huge part of its charm. Now featuring on the inspiring BBC Two travel series ‘Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby’ we anticipate yet more travellers will catch a wanderlust for luxury among the mountains of Oman.

In episode two of the series’ second season, presenters Giles Coren and Monica Galetti journey to this outstanding luxury resort in the Al Hajar Mountain range and are immediately wowed. The opening of the programme shows them arriving the hotel’s central courtyard, which serves as a perfect example of Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar’s integration of the contemporary and traditional; a principle that applies not only to the architecture but the whole ethos here.

Opening scenes also show them looking out at the majestic landscapes from Diana’s Point. Named after the late Princess of Wales, who visited the spot in 1986, this canyon platform can be used as a setting for pre-dinner drinks or an extra-special celebration meal.

Coren and Galleti then go ‘behind the scenes’ with staff to see just what goes into making a contemporary luxury resort infused with a sense of Omani culture run so flawlessly. The lengths gone to to create the ‘wow factor’ can be seen as Giles helps staff take bags to the guest’s rooms, ready for their arrival. And then there’s the 200-metre cliff-edge climb led by resort expert Maher; an unforgettable experience that shows the diversity of activities available here.

Two of our Inspiring Travel team have been lucky enough to visit Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar. Partnership Director Lee Marshall and Travel Specialist Moreno Intranova journeyed here in October last year, and with the resort due to be showcased on Amazing Hotels, they wanted to share their fond memories of the resort with you:

Lee says:

“This hotel holds such strong memories for me. From our first morning there, eating an early breakfast on the terrace of Al Maisan, with nothing more to disturb the sense of peace than the gentle sound of water flowing from the fountains as the day woke up around me; bliss. It’s a truly magical resort that gently sneaks up on you without you realising.

The location, overlooking the Al Hajar Mountains really is breathtaking; giving you a genuine feeling of tranquillity and being at one with nature. I loved the way the scenery started to change as the sun began to set. Each night of our stay, there was a sense of anticipation as we enjoyed a sundowner or two at Diana’s Point, waiting for that final moment when day gave way to night. ”

Moreno says:

“The scenery here is certainly a highlight. As well as a spectacular setting for cocktails in the evening, Diana’s Point is the location for morning yoga sessions and if you want to feel at one with nature I can’t think of many views more inspiring than this one!

Inside the resort there’s plenty to please the eye too. The design is so thoughtful and stylish throughout and the spa is absolutely beautiful. I stayed in a Premier Canyon View Room, which was very spacious and had floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors leading onto the balcony, where I could enjoy yet another fantastic view.

Everything here was of the highest quality; food, service and facilities. We were only able to stay for two nights but I would happily recommend a week here to any of my clients looking for a luxurious and memorable break.”
