Blue Planet II Inspiration: Manta Rays

Inspiring Travel Company | 31 Oct, 2017

The incredible new BBC wildlife series Blue Planet II has now arrived on our screens; bringing with it a wealth of global wildlife wonders, a focus on marine conservation and pioneering camera work that has uncovered never-before-seen species.

This inspiring new programme has given many of us a thirst for an ocean-based holiday to experience for ourselves, and to see with our own eyes, the stunning array of creatures who live below our oceans’ surface.

If, like us, you’ve now got itchy (webbed!) feet, our sister company Rainbow Tours is the expert in wildlife holidays and will be able to create a bespoke holiday, perhaps to South Africa to witness the Marine Big Five dance in the waves, or to the amazing Galapagos where the whale sharks will ‘wow’ you.

For a luxury holiday with a ‘Blue Planet II’ experience included, our very own Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru has just the thing. Here the waters of the Baa Atoll are home to an incredibly rich wealth of sea life, and having been declared a UNESCO World Biosphere, the atoll holds within its bounds some nine core protected areas including Hanifaru Bay and Baathala; renowned manta ray hotspots. The resort is also home to the Maldivian Manta Ray Project.

Between the months of June to November the resort offers guests a truly once in a lifetime experience to see these majestic rays, and the world’s biggest fish - the whale shark.

You could opt for ‘Manta Watch’, a package at Landaa Giraavaru which includes a manta ray snorkelling excursion, a personal coral frame propagation and a dolphin cruise.

Or if you really want to immerse yourself in the underwater world there’s the ‘Manta Ray Scientist for a Day’ programme. Exclusive to guests of the resort, your day begins with a trip on board a dhoni boat accompanied by some of the world’s leading experts on manta rays. You’ll then spot rays, help to record information for use in the project, and be taught how to take identification photos, vital in tracking numbers. The climax of the day is a free dive among the manta rays; a truly unforgettable experience that you’ll cherish forever.

Or for those who just want to dip their toe in the water, guests can also sign up to the Manta-on-Call service, meaning that you'll be contacted immediately when manta rays are sighted close to the luxury resort… so you can hop on a speedboat to see them for yourself!
