Here at the Inspiring Travel Company we pride ourselves on the first-hand knowledge held by our team, which, lucky for them (!), means they get sent all over the world in search of the best travel experiences to inspire our clients.
Recently our Head of Chairman’s Club and Private Clients, Natalie Russell-Blackburn Perkins, headed to the Maldives to gain new insight on these stunning islands, and we asked her to report back on her stay at the epic Gili Lankanfushi.
This truly exceptional luxury island resort is a favourite with honeymooners thanks to its thatched villas on stilts over the clear lagoon, feet-in-the-sand dining and an array of romantic experiences that include a sunset dhoni cruise, dining under the stars and the jungle cinema. Service here is exceptional, led by your own personal assistant throughout your stay known as Mr or Mrs Friday; a nod to Robinson Crusoe.
Here’s what Natalie had to say about her Gili Lankanfushi stay…
From the minute you are escorted onto Gili Lankanfushi’s private speedboat for your luxury transfer, you feel at ease. Handed a delightful ice-cold drink and given a bag for you to put your shoes into for the “no shoes no news” concept of the island, there is an automatic sense of calm as you head to your desert island wonderland. An array of the Gili team meet you on the wooden jetty with smiling faces to welcome you to your new home from home, and at this point you are also introduced to your very own ‘Mr Friday’ whom looks after your every whim imaginable on the island.
Gili Lankanfushi is relaxed yet very luxurious, with unique concepts such as an outdoor jungle cinema and an eco-recycling plant. That’s in addition to the extraordinary inclusions you would have of a luxury property, such as an amazing overwater spa, tennis court, selection of restaurants and watersports facilities.
All of the villas are over the water (with some only reachable by boat for even more privacy) and their expansive space creates a backdrop to really relax, but with all villas having bicycles for when you want to get out and explore the island. For those looking to be a little more social, there is a beautiful large swimming pool and beach restaurant; the food at which I thought was incredible.
Although there’s no kids’ club, families are absolutely accepted and will be looked after by your own Mr Friday. But rest assured the allowance of children does not dissuade from your enjoyment if you are visiting as a couple.
A stand out moment for me: in passing conversation to a member of the restaurant team, I mentioned that I loved chocolate instead of desserts...after dinner that night, when I arrived back at my villa, a knock at the door came and behold Mr Friday stood with a rather large plate of homemade chocolates! From a simple passing comment to his colleague, which had been passed on and arranged, I was quite taken aback!
A typical day and top tips from me if you are going to the island: you must set your alarm to see the stunning sunrise, followed by the morning yoga class which is complimentary and right on the beach. Then cycle to the restaurant for an indulgent champagne breakfast…a day of relaxing, maybe with a spa treatment and a bit of watersports, then round the day off with sunset cocktails in the overwater bar…the perfect day!
