Exploring Inspiring Travel Company resorts in Mexico

Earlier this year I spent a few days in the fascinating country of Mexico to visit some of the superb luxury hotels and resorts which the Inspiring Travel Company features there.

My journey started with a direct flight on British Airways from Heathrow to Cancun, which I was surprised to find only took 10 hours 20 minutes.

From my experience in Mexico, there are two distinct kinds of luxury holiday available. The very comfortable and affordable, and the very luxurious, ‘treat’ resorts. ITC offers both.

The Mayakoba estate, which was where I began my visit, is a reclaimed wildlife conservation area which was once mangroves. It still has lush waterways throughout, and large areas have been transformed into fantastic golf courses with views over the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea.

My first stop was the Rosewood Mayakoba. This really is a top tier resort which is great for both couples and families alike. It’s contemporary in style and instinctive in service and I was blown away by the ‘there before you ask for it’ manner in which the staff see to your every whim. The details that really matter were thought of at every turn, from personalised, monogrammed pillow cases and robe in the bathroom, to tortilla chips and an ice cold beer waiting in my room for me on arrival.

I was reluctant to leave this idyllic luxury hideaway, but excited to venture to the Banyan Tree Mayakoba; another chic Mexican retreat offered by the Inspiring Travel Company. Here there is an authentic Mexican feel, fused with Asian influences; offering a relaxed, much smaller resort with excellent cuisine and where each room has its own swimming pool.

From there, I was off to the affordable, and larger, Fairmont Mayakoba. There is a seriously diverse selection of restaurants here, the Willow Stream Spa and world-class scuba diving and snorkelling. Getting around the Mayakoba mangroves is best experienced by water taxi, which is a superb way to see the diverse landscape of this Mexican region for yourself.

My final destination was the Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa in Riviera Maya. Here the décor and design is very much classic, hacienda-style. This Belmond property is a haven of tradition and is seen as a ‘grande dame’ of Mexico offering a high level of luxury and an authentic experience…with no televisions in the rooms! I was wowed by the personal service, which included putting a running machine in my room after I mentioned to the staff that I was training for a charity run. The resort is located on a beautiful stretch of beach on the Yucatán peninsula and faces the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Before I ventured to Mexico, I was fully expecting it to be very Americanized, a caricature of Mexican life aimed at the US market. While this may be the case at some resorts, what I found was that the the Inspiring Travel Company portfolio in Mexico offers the very best of authentic experiences, including great service, traditional décor, excellent local fare and some incredible cultural and historical sites to visit, such as Tulum. There’s also great shopping, which I certainly didn’t expect, with many designer brands at the Playa del Carmen.

My advice? When you’ve booked your Mexican luxury holiday with ITC, ask our Concierge team to arrange a VIP tour of Tulum for you, as well as a tequila tasting. Both were highlights of my trip to this fascinating country.
