Last weekend the beautiful Greek island of Santorini celebrated the Ifestia Festival. In one of Greece's most exclusive holiday destinations, onlookers were treated to a sensational firework display, set off from boats out to sea. This was the climax of three days of concerts and events that celebrated the natural history and local culture of the island.
At the Inspiring Travel Company we know that our discerning clients love to enjoy sunshine and swimming pools on their luxury Greek holidays, but many also crave a taste of other cultures and new experiences. Guests that stayed at Santorini's finest boutique hotels between 21st-23rd, would not have been disappointed in this regard!
The main island of Santorini and its surrounding sister islands hug a caldera; a submerged volcanic 'bowl' that was formed by one of the largest volcanic events in recorded history. This dramatic natural event is what produced the spectacular cliffs that line the caldera's edge. Today these cliffs are covered with beautiful whitewashed homes and hotels that trickle down towards the Aegean Sea.
There's something inspiring about a whole island stopping to celebrate the majesty of nature and Santorini does it in style - take a look for yourself!
The jaw-dropping firework display is designed to replicate the ancient volcanic eruption and we think it's very effective! Most of our partner properties in Santorini are luxury boutique hotels that overlook the caldera itself, meaning that they are perfectly placed to take it all in.
Katikies is a gloriously luxurious hotel, where whitewashed architecture seems to mould itself on to the cliffs and a striking infinity-edge pool melds seamlessly with the shimmering water of the caldera itself. Sitting right next to the sensational pool is Seltz Champagne Bar & Restaurant. We imagine a few lucky guests enjoyed a fine glass of bubbly, or even a sumptuous meal, whilst watching the firework display. Of course, every room and suite at this intimate hotel boasts a verandah with its own caldera view, so some may have chosen to enjoy the event in luxurious privacy. How romantic!
White-washed elegance is also the order of the day at Grace Santorini, where another stunning infinity pool provides uninterrupted caldera views. At the restaurant last Sunday a special celebration menu was created by the hotel's outstanding chef Spyros Agious and guests could enjoy their food al fresco while the sky was lit up and live music played beyond. Private balconies abound here too, so maybe a few couples got a special treat on their luxury Santorini honeymoon. We hope so!
As you can imagine, this festival is a real draw to travellers from across the world. If you'd like to witness it next year, talk to a Travel Specialist soon to book at one of our exquisite hotels. Of course, with temperatures still in the mid-twenties this September, you might want to visit this beautiful island sooner rather than later!
