I last visited Royal Palm around 18 months ago, and although you could tell straight away that this place was special, it was also in need of a bit of TLC after ruling Mauritius for some 30 years.
So that’s exactly what Beachcomber did in 2014…and what a transformation! The rooms are bright, fresh and have all the modern conveniences (light switches on the bed headboard, USB sockets to charge your phone along with normal sockets so you don’t have to fight with what needs the electricity the most!). Everything here is about space; a huge bed with so much space between the sets of pillows that you can barely see your partner (!) and a large stand-alone bath…bliss!
Royal Palm also keeps the room occupancies low, so even though the suites are spacious, they don’t allow the number of people in them that other hotels might. For example, in the new Ocean Suites which have a separate bedroom and lounge, they accept 2 adults and 1 child. I stayed in a new Junior Suite which was HUGE for a starting room category.
All suites also come with a complimentary mini-bar full of soft drinks and water, and a coffee machine with six different flavoured capsules and teas of many varieties that are all replenished daily. And as this is Royal Palm, if you tell them in advance that you only want six decaf-coffee capsules or just mint tea, then your mini-bar will be full of these.
This resort really does have its clients as its number one priority – the service is second to none, and there are thoughtful touches that make all the difference. Examples of these details include the fact that, let’s face it, when you’re on holiday you don’t want to have to set your alarm to get ready for breakfast…no problem; at Royal Palm they don’t have a tray charge for breakfast so you can order a huge and delicious breakfast delivered straight to your room. Just choose what you want the night before and then in the morning choose where you want it – in your room or balcony/terrace, where you can enjoy your pastries, toast and jams, eggs, fruit, smoothie (just me?) in the comfort of your fluffy white bathrobe.
This concept is the same for guests staying on a half board basis too, as there is a daily chef’s menu to choose from which is part of your package, so you can come back to your suite after a tiring day on the long stretch of white sand beach (topping up your tan or enjoying the complimentary watersports), or from your day trip to Grande Baie which is a 15 minute walk away, playing tennis or working up an appetite in the gym, or enjoying a treatment at the Clarins Spa; and not have to get ready for dinner. It’s perfection!
