IMPORTANT HURRICANE UPDATE

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK IN SOUTH AFRICA

Richard Nurse | 22 Oct, 2014

Our Destination Manager in Cape Town, Richard Nurse, divulges a fantastic activity to pursue in South Africa on his weekly update from the city…

Well folks, what a lovely way to have spent the weekend: hiking on and around our famous Table Mountain.

It was the Hoerikwaggo trail we followed and we stayed at the Silvermine tented camp on the first night and the second night was spent at the Overseers Hut on top of Table Mountain.

The hike was over two days and took us from Silvermine campsite down to the Noordhoek peak and then onto a contour path in the direction of Hout Bay. This path runs parallel to and is 500 metres above Chapmans Peak Drive.

On arriving at Hout Bay we lunched at Chapmans Peak Hotel (famous for its calamari!) before heading up Constantia Nek to spend the evening at the Overseers Hut on top of Table Mountain. This was a particularly enjoyable experience as one could watch all the city lights below slowly coming on as the evening drew nearer and all this while enjoying a cold beer and a BBQ.

The next day the walk took us down the mountain through Orange Kloof and back to Constantia Nek where the walk ended. The two days of walking were reasonably easy although not recommended for someone with weak knees! If you are a lover of nature, then it’s a must on your stay in South Africa.

The varieties of Fynbos (an eco-system unique to the Western Cape) were amazing. Beautiful Proteas and Watsonias in bloom, as well as the various forms of restios and probably one of the highlights was the walk along the Disa River as we wandered down through orange Kloof surrounded by indigenous trees.

The views too of Hout Bay, False Bay and Noordhoek Beach were breathtaking and looked like something from a postcard.

If ever you are thinking of visiting us in Cape Town and would like a bit of exercise and an experience with nature let us know and we will arrange it for you. I can assure you that it is something you will never regret.

I look forward to sharing some stories with you when we sit around the campfire one evening.
