OUR CONCORDE FLIGHT TO SANDY LANE, BARBADOS

Ian & Joy Thompson | 27 May, 2014

To celebrate an important wedding anniversary we wanted to do something extra special. At that time we had just discovered Sandy Lane in Barbados, so the plan was to travel there on Concorde.

It wasn't long after the Concorde disaster in France, and so the price for a one way trip and economy return flights didn't seem too bad. With great anticipation we booked the trip. The night before, we travelled down to Heathrow on British Airways and stayed in a hotel at the airport.

After a light breakfast we made our way to the dedicated check-in (no queue!) then into the special Concorde lounge where we could see the plane outside. There was also another Concorde plane outside, just in case there was a technical fault!

On boarding the aircraft our first impressions were just how long and narrow it was inside. Setting off at 9.45am we had to wait until we flew past Ireland before the Captain announced he would be 'putting his foot down' to reach Mach 2, after which we enjoyed caviar and Champagne.

On arrival in Barbados there appeared to be a lot of people watching Concorde land; which was the same time we had left Heathrow - 9.45am local time!

After descending the steps we took lots of photos of Concorde from the runway and were soon through immigration and collecting our luggage; not the usual queues that we had been accustomed to.

The only disappointment to arriving so early was that our room at Sandy Lane wasn't quite ready!

After a wonderful stay in Barbados we returned to the airport and joined the queue for economy where the lady in check in noticed we had flown Concorde so very kindly up-graded us to business class for our return flight home.

We still have our boarding passes, menus, luggage tags etc. in our album.

What an experience!
