Responsible Traveller: Pack for a Purpose

Inspiring Travel Company | 5 Nov, 2019

Travelling with some extra space in your luggage? Why not use it to say thank you to the communities you visit? It's undeniable that tourism has a huge impact on the environments and communities that we travel to.

While the negative impacts do bear attention, travellers also have the power to have a positive effect, through the Pack for a Purpose initiative. Since 2010, this organisation has helped travellers to make useful contributions to charitable initiatives all around the globe by using space in their luggage to bring requested supplies. Through the donation of over 140,000 kg of supplies – that include plasters, blood pressure cuffs, books, calculators and toys – Pack for a Purpose participants have been able to support education, healthcare, child welfare, animal welfare and social development projects in over 60 countries around the globe.

What better way to say thank you to a place you’ve loved than to give a little back? We’re delighted to share that several properties in our portfolio are participants in the Pack for a Purpose scheme – including Kasbah Tamadot in Morocco, Mandarin Oriental Canouan in St Vincent & The Grenadines, and Calabash Luxury Boutique Hotel in Grenada.

Kasbah Tamadot, Morocco

After falling in love with the land and culture of the high Moroccan Atlas Mountains when her son Sir Richard Branson founded the boutique hotel Kasbah Tamadot in 2005, Eve Branson was inspired to establish the Eve Branson Foundation: a charity to support local communities through providing them with the tools, training and materials to learn and share local skills and crafts. Since joining Pack for a Purpose in 2012, Kasbah Tamadot has collected over 400kg of clothing on behalf of the Eve Brandon Foundation.

Mandarin Oriental Canouan, St Vincent & the Grenadines

Last year, the hotel launched ‘Canouan Cares’, a charitable programme supporting local students, where visiting guests can contribute through Pack for Purpose. Since launching, the hotel’s ‘Cargo 4 kids’ programme has provided over 120 students in need throughout St Vincent & The Grenadines with reading and writing materials, calculators and clothes.

Calabash Luxury Boutique Hotel, Grenada

Through Pack for a Purpose, this boutique family-run hotel provides ongoing support to three local social projects: The Bel Air Children’s Home and The Queen Elizabeth Home, which both support children in need of care, as well as The Dorothy Hopkin Centre which supports children and adults with physical and mental disabilities.
