One hotel in our portfolio for which we are renowned is the iconic Sandy Lane on Barbados, a stalwart of luxury travel that has welcomed household names for generations. But what makes Sandy Lane so special? We sent Travel Specialist Moreno to Barbados to find out…
“My Sandy Lane experience started as soon as I touched down into Barbados Airport, when I was met by one of their airport representatives and provided a much welcomed fast-track service through immigration and baggage claim. Bypassing the long queues after a long-haul flight was fantastic and it was a great start to my three-day trip.
The transfer to Sandy Lane took only 35 minutes and I was very excited to return to the legendary hotel since my first visit 15 years ago. On arrival the team met me with a warm welcome, cool cocktail and a cold towel that had the most beautifully infused smell of eucalyptus. I could not help admiring the stunning view through reception to the sea and just had to take some pictures. I was then whisked away to my room where check-in formalities were completed.
I stepped into my Luxury Ocean Room and instantly felt at home. My gorgeously decorated and spacious room was dominated by the huge king-size bed and a view that was drawing me instantly to the balcony! I opened the huge patio doors out onto the large al fresco space, admiring the lookout from the third floor down onto the beach.
I quickly realised that there were lots of buttons and mod cons around the room and was shown what everything was and how it worked. I even had an iPad by my bed which operated all the lights, curtains and a ‘do not disturb’ sign.
The bathroom was very luxurious, with twin basin, a large bath tub and separate large shower cubicle. The amenities were plentiful with Sandy Lane branded toiletries and comfy bathrobes and towels. One thing I do like to have is plenty of drawers and wardrobe space and although I was only staying three days, I was not disappointed. There was even a complimentary unpacking/packing service for those that really want to be spoilt! I really felt the hotel covered everything so well in the room, which made my stay very comfortable.
Sandy Lane has two beautiful restaurants. The Bajan Blue, a relaxed à la carte and buffet restaurant serving a wonderful spread at breakfast, lunch and dinner. And then you have the intimately gorgeous L’Acajou; fine dining at its best offering a refined and classical cuisine.
The beach here at Sandy Lane is simply beautiful. A lovely long stretch of sandy beach dotted with pink sun loungers. If you prefer to laze around the pool, then there are lots of spots to relax and enjoy the sounds from the waterfall. A swim up bar is on hand for those much-desired cocktails too.
The Sandy Lane Spa, located next to the pool, offers a wide range of treatments and has its own Spa Café offering healthy options. I had the opportunity to indulge in a wonderful full body massage by one of their superb therapists. The experience was truly relaxing, and I really felt pampered.
Sandy Lane is of course also renowned for its golfing and is amongst the best in the world, with one of the three courses - Green Monkey - exclusive for guests of the hotel.
During my stay, I had the opportunity to go on an island tour, which included visiting the caves in the north of the island, rum tasting and a visit to Lime Grove for shopping. Barbados has a lot to offer the traveller and there is such a cool, friendly vibe about the place.
Overall, I was extremely impressed with the attentive service, warmth and friendliness of the staff at Sandy Lane. They could read you even before you tried to catch their attention and that for me is service at its best. I was blown away particularly by the cuisine and I have to say it was amongst the best I have tasted anywhere.
