Recently, Travel Specialist, Joanne Robinson, set off for sunny Mallorca, the largest of the three Balearic Islands in the sparkling Mediterranean. After just a short flight, Jo set to exploring three of our featured properties there. Here’s what she had to report…
Jumeriah Port Soller
As soon as I arrived at the beautiful Jumeriah Port Soller, I was struck by its fabulous location. Perched on a cliffside beside the striking Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and overlooking the charming fishing village of Port Soller, the resort perfectly balances rural surroundings with somewhere to walk out to – I even took a tram ride through the village, taking in the sights of authentic Mallorca.
After a warm and swift welcome, I was shown to my stunningly designed room, complete with a plush king-size bed, understated furnishings, luxurious bathroom amenities and stunning views over the blue Mediterranean Sea. Once settled in, I began to explore the resort further, wandering through the beautifully-fragranced gardens and continuing to soak up those mesmerising sea panoramas. Reaching the pool area, it became clear how this property was suitable for everyone – children were playing happily in the main pool, while the adults-only pool was utterly serene.
As for cuisine, Jumeirah Port Soller is home to three great restaurants. I sampled lovely local delicacies at the ocean-view Cap Roig, as well as flavoursome Japanese delights at the modern Sunset Sushi Lounge – the variety of choice was truly impressive!
Belmond La Residencia
I have wanted to visit Belmond La Residencia for many years now and it certainly did not disappoint! As I pulled up to the stunning 16th century building surrounded by olive groves and fragranced citrus trees, a genuine feeling of calm surrounded me. This tranquillity spreads throughout the entire property and its grounds, particularly in the beautiful spa, offering a nature-inspired menu of luxurious treatments.
There is no shortage of the classic Belmond elegance, but the property is also charmingly quirky and artistic, with each room boasting its own individual design and décor. One thing they do have in common, though, is a wonderful view of the island’s mountains - I was truly blown away by the panoramas from my room!
Just a short (and scenic!) walk to the traditional village of Deià, it was great to explore the local shops and authentic restaurants in the evening. Reminiscent of something from a fairy tale and often frequented by celebrities, Deià is part of a UNESCO World Heritage-protected area in the Tramuntana Mountains.
Park Hyatt Mallorca
Upon arriving at the elegant Park Hyatt Mallorca, I noticed just how peacefully rural it was, nestled within a lush green valley and surrounded by little else. Inside, it became clear just how little that mattered as the resort has everything you need – and more!
After freshening up in my sophisticatedly appointed room - complete with an impressive marble bathroom, luxurious Bottega Veneta® amenities and a furnished terrace – I took a walk around the charming resort, inspired by a traditional Mallorquin hilltop village. The Serenitas Spa was a highlight for me; perfectly making use of its serene surroundings, the spa offers a range of rejuvenating treatments.
As for entertainment, there is a beautiful pool and country club just a scenic, 5-minute walk away, while golf fans can enjoy the staggering four 18-hole courses just 15 minutes away. In the beautiful valley, you can experience hiking along a variety of routes, or embrace the region’s grapes at the hotel’s own weekly wine pairing.
After a hard (ish) day of unwinding beneath the Mallorquin sunshine, it was time for dinner. With four great restaurants on site, the choice seemed endless and everything I sampled was truly delicious! Whether you select traditional Spanish fare or Asian-inspired dishes, mouth-watering cuisine is guaranteed, in an exquisitely designed setting.
After some fascinating exploring, plenty of relaxation and lots of great food, my Mallorquin adventure had come to an end. My verdict? A welcoming, scenic and eclectic island with some fabulous resorts, and the perfect short-haul retreat for honeymooners, families and group-trips alike.
