Endless activities, sandy beaches, delicious cuisine and a laidback atmosphere…what more could you ask for on a Caribbean holiday?
The Bahamas offers all this and more, and whether you’re looking for a culinary journey, a beachside retreat, an active adventure or even a bit of retail therapy, you’re guaranteed a luxurious holiday you’ll never forget in this island nation.
With so much to do and so many amazing things to see, it’s impossible to come up with just one favourite thing about The Bahamas – so we came up with an entire list! Read on to discover ten of the reasons we love this destination (and we know you will too).
1. Aquatic adventures
Some of the world’s best scuba diving can be found here, and there are incredible sights waiting to be explored in the clear waters; from coral reefs and shipwrecks, to caves and amazing geological formations. The ‘blue holes’ found in this area are a scientific phenomenon, and exploring them with a licensed guide is one of the most unique underwater experiences anywhere in the world. Guests at Sandals Royal Bahamian can take part in a staggering amount of unlimited watersports – everything from wakeboarding to aquatriking is included in your stay at this beautiful resort. We also love the array of activities at Atlantis Paradise Island, whether it’s snorkelling, scuba or snuba – for guests who aren’t certified to scuba! Feeding stingrays is an unforgettable experience, as is snorkelling around the ruins of Atlantis, or meeting the resident mammals at Dolphin Cay.
2. Wonderful wildlife
As well as admiring the amazing landscapes underwater, you can spot a variety of wildlife in the ocean around The Bahamas. Dolphins, stingrays, sea turtles and vibrant coral call the waters around the 16 main Bahamian islands home. On land, wildlife lovers will enjoy spotting endemic species like Bahamian iguanas, Flamingos and the Abaco parrot. More daring visitors can dive with sharks – Black tip, Hammerhead, Tiger, Bull, Nurse and Caribbean reef sharks can all be found here.
3. Swimming pigs!
The Exumas, made up of over 300 islands, has long been known as a celebrity hideaway, with several A-listers having homes here. But without a doubt, the real stars of this picturesque area - and definitely the most Instagrammable inhabitants - are the swimming pigs that live on Big Major Cay! There are several theories about how they got to the island – some claim sailors left them there, while some believe they swam ashore from a shipwreck. However the pigs got to the island, they’re there to stay, and visitors can swim and play alongside them on the sand and in the clear water!
4. Vibrant cuisine
Bahamian cuisine is deliciously flavoursome and spicy, with a variety of influences from Southern America to traditional Caribbean flavours. Sandals Royal Bahamian offers an outstanding choice of unlimited dining, with ten excellent restaurants serving a wide range of international cuisine; we love the outstanding seafood and ocean views at Gordon’s Pier Restaurant, or for an authentic and delicious taste of the Caribbean enjoy dinner at Spices. Conch is a real speciality of the islands, and can be served in lots of different ways, including fresh, cracked (fried) and steamed. Those with a sweet tooth shouldn’t miss Guava Duff, cornmeal pudding or the famous rum cake. And of course, the rum here is excellent – we’re partial to sipping a Yellow Bird cocktail and enjoying the sea views!
5. Waterpark fun
Young visitors (and those young at heart!) will love Atlantis Paradise Island’s Aquaventure, which offers a world of fun amidst over 20 million gallons of water! Spread over 141-acres, the waterpark is home to 11 pools, 20 swimming areas, an array of thrilling water slides and dedicated children’s areas that ensure there’s fun for every member of your family. Thrill-seekers will be spoilt for choice – try The Abyss, which starts with a 50-foot near-vertical drop in complete darkness and continues through a 200-foot slide into an underground pool, or The Surge, where you’ll find yourself starting at the summit of the 120-foot Power Tower and tubing down into white water rapids below! For a more relaxing time, take a calming trip down the soothing Lazy River.
6. Honeymoon hideaways
For a romantic and intimate honeymoon, look no further than an island retreat here; there are a host of luxurious hotels scattered across The Bahamas, but Nassau Paradise Island’s beachfront resorts are among our favourites anywhere in the world. The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort has long been one of the most glamourous enclaves in the Caribbean, and the combination of signature One&Only service, the outstanding spa and the new infinity pool makes this a top choice for an indulgent honeymoon. Another superlative option is The Cove at Atlantis; a superb location means each guest feels as though they are on a private white sand paradise, and newlyweds can enjoy time at the exclusive adults-only pool. For intimate relaxation, try the new Scents of Love couples massage at the Red Lane Spa at Sandals Royal Bahamian.
7. Retail therapy
Whether you’re after some traditional souvenirs of your special holiday, or you’re in the market for the most stylish in couture fashion, you’re sure to be in shopping heaven in The Bahamas, where you can find traditional art and local delicacies alongside designer outlets like Michael Kors, Versace, Tory Burch and Bulgari. Head to Nassau for the famous traditional Straw Market, or visit Paradise Island’s Bahama Crafts Centre for a range of Bahamian handicrafts. For unique gifts for friends and family, we love Craft Cottage, where you can find colourful home furnishings, jewellery and charming knick-knacks.
Of course, we couldn’t make a list like this without mentioning the world-class golf to be had in The Bahamas! There are some truly stunning courses here, such as the one at The Ocean Club which offers breath-taking ocean views alongside a PGA golf academy. Across the islands you’ll find plenty of scenic courses to play a round or two on, but the award-winning course at Sandals Emerald Bay in particular will delight golfing enthusiasts – designed by Greg Norman, the course is famed for its dramatic shoreline position and challenging fairways.
9. Cinematic landscapes
Aside from the picturesque golf courses, you’ll find an endless supply of staggeringly beautiful landscapes here. And so it’s no surprise that Hollywood has come calling – The Bahamas has played a starring role in lots of high-profile films, from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to James Bond! Nassau Paradise Island’s The Ocean Club featured prominently in 2006’s Casino Royale, as Daniel Craig stayed in a palatial villa, wandered the glamourous reception and played high-stakes poker in the library. The Versailles-inspired gardens here also featured in the film, and should be a ‘must’ on any visit here.
10. Party atmosphere
From poolside DJs and exclusive bars to lively casinos and sleek lounges, there’s always somewhere to celebrate in style here. Guests at Atlantis, Paradise Island, can gamble with ocean views at The Cove Pool, or head indoors to the Sea Glass Lounge for Blackjack and Roulette. Another exciting option is the off-shore island at Sandals Royal Bahamian, which comes alive in the evenings with themed parties and dancing around the bonfire. For a more laidback evening, head to The Ocean Club’s elegant Dune for a gourmet meal with a view.
