With a unique Mayan-inspired design and a pristine white sand beach on its doorstep, Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa is a seaside haven offering barefoot luxury, peaceful seclusion and plenty of unforgettable experiences. Swim in one of the three outdoor pools; cycle through the resort’s scenic trails; play a round on one of the two tennis courts; or head down to the on-site marine centre for diving and other watersports. We’ve put together some of the many unique things we love about the resort below, to inspire your next trip.
1. The award-winning beach
Regularly named in Top 10 lists, Maroma Beach is one of the world’s most picturesque stretches of sand – the perfect place to while away an afternoon in the sun or sip a cocktail as you watch the sunset. Climb the resort’s observation tower to get 360-degree views of the resort and admire the flash of white sand as it meets the azure waters.
2. Kinan Spa
‘Kinan’ means ‘healing energy of the sun’ in Mayan, and this luxurious spa is dedicated to traditional therapies – some of the treatments on offer here can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Try the Kinan Ritual or the Hot Poultice Massage, or take to the rooftop palapa for a relaxing yoga session. From traditional temazcal detoxifying ceremonies to the hive of stingless Melipona bees, you’re sure to have a completely unique experience.
3. The Food
You’ll find some of the best food in the Riviera Maya here. The upscale El Sol serves contemporary Mexican cuisine by executive chef Gabriel Kolofon; the restaurant’s impressive wine cellar means it’s easy to find the perfect pairing for your meal, whether you opt for Kurobuta pork tacos, lobster enchiladas or any of the wide range of local seafood dishes. At El Restaurante enjoy delicious local cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner – enjoying your evening meal under the stars here is a treat you won’t forget. Head to Freddy’s bar for a huge choice of mezcals and tequilas and the charming company of Freddy himself.
4. The Tortillas!
Speaking of food, freshly-made tortillas are truly some of the most distinctive and delicious elements of the resort; Dalia – better known as La Tia – prepares handmade tortillas fresh each morning for the resort. These are a quintessential part of your visit to the resort, and you shouldn’t miss La Tia’s quesadillas at breakfast!
As if the sea views and stylish décor weren’t enough to fill your Instagram, each night at dusk the resort staff light 1,000 candles one by one, transforming the entire property into a picture-perfect scene straight out of a fairy-tale.
6. Location, location, location
It’s hard to believe that this paradise can be reached in just half an hour from the airport, but it’s true; just a 30-minute drive from Cancun Airport, the resort is easily reached from the main highway, and yet still offers a secluded and tranquil hideaway where you’ll feel like you’ve got the whole place to yourself. This area is also bursting with history and culture, and there are several amazing Mayan sites to explore, as well as truly stunning beaches complete with pristine white sand and sparkling azure waters… complete bliss!
7. Swim with Whale sharks
If you’ve been watching the BBC’s Blue Planet II, you’ll have seen lots of the world’s most amazing marine life on-screen. Here at Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa between June and September, you will have the chance to not only see majestic Whale sharks up close, but actually swim alongside them! You could also spot dolphins and Manta rays swimming close by, and with sailing, kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving on offer here, there are plenty of opportunities to have your own marine adventures.
8. Mayan culture
The Yucatan Peninsula is home to some of the most fascinating historical and archaeological sites in the world; here you can explore magnificent Mayan ruins and temples, shrouded in mystery by dense jungle or overlooking spectacular beachfront. Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa pays homage to the Mayan culture of the area in its architecture and design, from beautifully tiled floors to the soothing whitewashed buildings themselves; guests can also browse traditional Mexican crafts and gifts at the boutique. Nearby there are a range of fascinating sites to explore – head deep into the jungle to discover Coba, admire the beach from the Tulum ruins, or discover the amazing pyramid of Chichen Itza.
