It’s the era of the staycation! Inspiring Travel Company Product Manager Gabrielle Cowley headed to Hampshire for a luxury stay at the beautiful Heckfield Place, and discovered that sometimes you don’t need to rack up the airmiles for a relaxing luxury holiday…
Located in the heart of rural Hampshire around an hour away from London, Heckfield Place is a Georgian family home that has been lovingly restored to luxury standards. Every detail has been painstakingly chosen by the current owner – from the positioning of the artwork right down to the width of the floorboards! It's a really warm, elegant and inviting property that really does make you feel at home just moments after you arrive.
I visited Heckfield Place for my staycation with my mum and sister – it’s a pre-wedding getaway and it turned out to be exactly what I needed and the perfect weekend retreat in the UK. On arrival we were met by the team and welcomed to the property. After a smooth check-in we decided to take a quick stroll around the ground to get our bearings… but since the house is set over 438 acres it would take more than a quick stroll to explore it all!
Next on the agenda was complimentary tea and cake in the drawing room, which is served every day between 4 and 5pm. It was the perfect pick-me-up and a great opportunity to explore more of the house. After our tea and a little rest, I headed to Little Bothy Spa. I was really pleased to discover that the spa uses natural skincare products by Wildsmith Skin, and it took just seconds for me to feel fully relaxed!
Before long, it was dinner time at Marle. The food at Heckfield Place really deserves a blog all on its own, as every meal was incredible. The estate has its own farm, kitchen gardens and orchard so all the ingredients are local and super fresh; just one of the many benefits of a staycation in the English countryside!
After dinner, we had cocktails in the Moon Bar. The atmosphere here is wonderful, and you can choose from a menu of old classics or try one of the Heckfield specialities. Or, ask the bartender if they can make your favourite drink. Nothing was too much trouble here, and it really did make our stay feel extra special and very relaxing. We didn’t miss tropical sun one bit!
After a fantastic dinner and a very relaxing spa treatment (and a drink or two in Moon Bar) it was time for bed. I stayed in a Chamber room, nestled amongst the corridors of Heckfield Place. The room was stunning, with contemporary yet warm décor that still feels in keeping with the Georgian style. I did have a little look around a few of the other rooms and would highly recommend a Signature room too – located in the main house, each room is unique in design and decorated to enhance original architectural features. For even more luxury, the Lake Room has its own sitting room and gorgeous panoramic views out over the lake in the grounds.
The next morning, I booked on to the Vinyassa Yoga class. The weather played ball and I was lucky enough to enjoy this outside on the hill overlooking the beautiful house. Heckfield Place works with Bodyism, a world-leading holistic wellness company who can tailor a personalised fitness blueprint for you to work with during your stay. I’d recommend looking at the schedule of classes and events for your stay ahead of time, and asking your Travel Specialist to book you in prior to arrival, to avoid disappointment. After yoga I’d built up quite an appetite for breakfast – luckily, it was yet another Heckfield Place experience that didn’t disappoint. Options included fresh pastries, homemade banana bread, fruit and granola, pancakes, your choice of eggs… all with tea, coffee or juice (there’s even green juice for those on a health kick!). Everything was delicious.
We decided to walk off breakfast and explore a bit more at the same time with another walk around the grounds. The weather was on our side again, and we took advantage of a beautiful sunny day to head out on a big walk. We wandered around the lakes, found the super-cute swing seat and even managed to visit the market garden and orchard.
I’d been really excited to visit Heckfield Place for awhile, and it totally exceeded my expectations. The staff are so friendly and helpful, the décor and design of the estate is simply stunning and there is a huge range of activities to enjoy whilst you are there. Or, you could simply relax… it’s a staycation, after all!
