The country is, of course, famous for its wildlife; spot the ‘Big Five’ on safari here in the iconic Kruger National Park, or perhaps head to the Cape of Good Hope to spot some penguins!

South Africa also offers a number of other types of holiday. Try a city break in beautiful Cape Town, visit the Cape Wineland vineyards that produce some of the finest New World wines, or head out to the Garden Route for some of the world’s most breathtaking natural vistas.

No matter which kind of holiday you’re after, with warmer temperatures and plenty of sights to see, South Africa is a superb destination to escape any dreary January weather.

Home to some of the most striking landscapes in the world, a holiday to Chilean Patagonia offers a stunning variety of landscapes and activities during the different seasons.

During January (the height of summer here), you’ll benefit from the longest days and warmest weather (temperatures can reach 22°C), and this is the best time to enjoy the jaw-dropping Torres del Paine National Park and perhaps explore the area on hiking, kayaking or rafting trips.

Stay at the stunning Tierra Patagonia, which overlooks the beautiful Lake Sarmiento, for a holiday combining adventure with the perfect amount of luxury. Culture seekers will also enjoy time exploring the museums and architecture of Punta Arenas.

Malaysia: 28°C

Here in the UK, rain, sleet, cold winds and lingering colds are all things we’ve come to accept from January.

If you are on a luxury holiday in Malaysia in January, while there might be a few rain clouds, temperatures usually hover around the 28°C mark, so it’s a great place to escape to for some warming sunshine in January.

For those who are keen to experience culture as well as warmth, visitors in the first two months of the year are also likely to experience religious festivals and celebrations, such as Thaipusam, which is celebrated with a colourful procession through Kuala Lumpur.

Travel to Langkawi to enjoy drier weather, clear skies and fantastic watersports, or head to Malacca to explore a historic centre surrounded by dramatic scenery.

You could visit the Tomb of the Kings, Paphos Fort and the Painted Churches in the Troodos region without the long queues that are usually part and parcel of visiting historic landmarks.

The cities of Limassol, Paphos and Nicosia offer great places to dine, architectural sites to explore and world-class shopping to indulge in. Alternatively, discovering Polis reveals stunning vistas of unspoilt natural beauty.

You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to places to stay as well. Parklane is an excellent hotel that ensures the whole family are captivated and content or you could immerse yourself in chic style with a stay at Almyra.

Culture abounds in Marrakech; visiting the souks or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Djemaa el-Fna market will fully immerse you in the fascinating history of this main square. At night, the square comes to life and attracts countless tourists to visit the market stalls and watch traditional snake charmers.

For something a little more relaxed away from the bustle of the souk, Yves St Laurent’s Majorelle Gardens and museum make the perfect tranquil sanctuary.

A stay at La Mamounia will ensure that you feel hidden away from the outside world and able to relax, but remain close enough to enjoy the culture and history of this fascinating city as you escape the cold January weather on a short-haul holiday.

If you're willing to head out of Marrakech, travel up into the Atlas Mountains for a completely unique experience at Richard Branson's Moroccan Retreat - Kasbah Tamadot.
