Mozambique’s laid-back capital, Maputo, is often passed over as merely a stopover city, but we’d recommend you take a couple of days to get to know this chilled out capital if time allows. Maputo holidays are perhaps a little more unorthodox than trips to the beach destinations along the coast, but spend a little time getting to know Maputo and you’ll leave with a better understanding of Mozambique.
This modern African city has emerged from an era of unsettlement and is now one of the most rapidly developing capitals on the continent, with fantastic connections to the rest of Southern Africa. Just a three-hour transfer to Kruger National Park and with regular flights from Johannesburg, Europe and the Middle East, Maputo holidays might be a lot easier than you think.
After many years of unrest, the city is bursting with life; a few days here will prove that this is a city on the up. A friendly welcome is guaranteed, especially if you throw yourself wholeheartedly into the music and food scene. Nightlife is dominated by a Latino beat that mixes African and Portuguese sounds, just as the local cuisine blends African cooking with a dash of Portuguese seasoning. There are many fantastic restaurants to try, and we’d especially recommend a sizzling plate of Mozambican prawns – a local delicacy that often comes with a side of fiery peri-peri.
The city’s quirky architecture is a curious blend of several styles: the Old Centre could be inspired by Havana; train stations and cathedrals are designed by the famous Frenchman, Gustave Eiffel; the Botanical Gardens devised by an English landscape gardener in 1885. As well as the grand buildings of the centre there are traditional African suburbs and plenty of markets where you can pick up hand-crafted souvenirs. The best part is that Maputo is safe to explore on foot – though at night we’d advise you to exercise caution and take a cab.
