Kwazulu Natal Overview

Known as the "Garden Province", KwaZulu Natal stretches along the eastern coast of South Africa, from Port Edward in the South, all the way up to the Mozambique border in the North making luxury Kwazulu Natal holidays an experience of diversity and variety.

Just a three hour drive from Durban, are the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains, the sweeping Savanna, the historic Boer war battlefields and spectacular game reserves. The subtropical, Indian Ocean coastline, with its splendid beaches is a wonderful place to relax and unwind.

Where to stay in KwaZulu-Natal

At The Oyster Box, Umhlanga you’ll find colonial-style elegance and classical charm at the edge of the Indian Ocean, offering contemporary luxuries whilst still evoking the nostalgia of days gone by. Situated close to Durban, it’s the ideal spot in which to slow the pace of your holiday with a little spa and beach living for a few days between safaris, battlefield tours and other more demanding touring activities.

The Fugitives’ Drift Lodge, KwaZulu-Natal promotes heritage tourism at its finest in this remote corner of the province, where your hosts will offer a fascinating and moving insight into one of the most famed conflicts of the English-speaking world, the Anglo Zulu War of 1879 and its iconic battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. Over and above the ‘must do’ battlefield tours the Lodge offers luxury cottage accommodation in a tranquil garden setting with views across the plains.

What to do in KwaZulu-Natal

Fascinating, moving, thought-provoking and wholly memorable - the battlefield tours given by the hugely knowledgeable lecturers at Fugitives’ Drift Lodge are more than mere talks. Given in the open air on the very battlefields that they describe, it would be more accurate to say that they are an experience for all of your senses. Whether you have a deep passion for history or merely a passing interest, they will live long in your memory.

The subtropical, Indian Ocean coastline, with its splendid beaches is a wonderful place to relax and unwind while the province’s biggest city of Durban is a cosmopolitan spot and a great place to shop and dine - the cuisine being varied, with the Ocean Terrace at The Oyster Box being a particular favourite in the region.
