The Hyatt Regency Kyoto is a contemporary and smoothly run hotel, decked out with a spa and various restaurants, that also offers easy access to this historic city’s best, central sites.
Pick a room, check in, and head out to explore Kyoto’s main attractions from the famous Higashiyama District, safe in the knowledge that you have a helpful concierge team, well-equipped hotel and spacious ‘guestroom with a view’ to return to at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto.
Certainly one of the city’s leading luxury properties, you can expect a host of spa treatments that go further than most here, including acupuncture and Shiatsu, as well as three onsite restaurants – including two with open kitchens – a gym, complimentary services, transfers, and a fantastically helpful Hyatt Regency concierge too.
Those aforementioned guestrooms and suites are actually quite modestly decorated, with a handful of Japanese-inspired ornaments, artworks and furnishings such as low-lying beds sitting in otherwise minimal spaces of neutral colour tones, plain walls and glass-clad bathrooms; a common style in Japan. Each is very well-equipped however, with a walk-in rain shower and separate tub, bathrobes, sofas and large plasma TVs, Wi-Fi, Blu-ray and CD players, an espresso machine and fridge plus a furnished balcony for nearly every room category, in-room extras and more space then coming thick and fast as you reach the higher-end suite options.
Overall your stay at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto will be one of varied gastronomy, from fresh buffets breakfasts to delectable sashimi dishes prepared before your very eyes; plenty of in-room and onsite amenities; that prime Higashiyama location; spa, gym and concierge services plus a good selection of guestrooms and suites, all with their own particular appeal; a fine choice by anyone’s standards.

Some of the standard rooms at Hyatt Regency Kyoto can at first appear a little modest in size when compared with the larger suite options, yet clever décor schemes and minimal furnishings make fantastic use of space, ensuring all feel as comfortable as possible. The interior design is intentionally on the pared-back side, with neutral cream carpets and light-coloured walls offset by colourful embroidered bedheads and the occasional paper lantern. Balconied guestrooms and larger suites do stand out for their extra comfort levels and size, though with DVD and CD players, Wi-Fi and air-conditioning, either a king-size bed or twin setup option, a separate bathtub and rain shower, bathrobes, a minibar and coffee maker all coming as standard – no room categories are left wanting here.

The Grill at Hyatt Regency Kyoto ticks just about all boxes – it has a fun open kitchen, al fresco terrace and elegant indoor area, serves everything from brunch to afternoon tea during the day and flame-grilled steaks at night; what more could you ask for? The produce is also seasonal and fresh across a lengthy restaurant menu – the sharing platters being particularly good. Or, simply pull up a chair at the bar and enjoy a leisurely evening of cocktails here.
Trattoria Sette is an indulgent Kyoto eatery, laidback and relaxed with long windows lining one wall and an open kitchen on the other. Cuisine here is inspired by the best of Italy and includes decadent pasta dishes, freshly made pizza and home-baked pastries from a separate bakery.
Savour the tastes of Japan at Touzan, a fine restaurant of locally sourced ingredients and fresh seafood that go into delicate sushi and sashimi dishes. If you’re new to Japanese cuisine, be sure to give it a go here while staying at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto.
A moody, atmospheric haunt that’s beautifully furnished though dimly-lit and full of either real-life antiques or vintage-style pieces; a wonderful contrast to the bright and spacious restaurant areas found elsewhere around the hotel. The list of drinks is long at Touzan Bar, so settle in for an evening of whiskies, cocktails and local craft beers aplenty.
Activities and Entertainment
Hyatt Regency Kyoto puts on a Maiko dance performance each day, which is a nice addition to the hotel’s restaurants, gardens and the spa, though further afield there’s plenty to see and do within easy reach of the property. These day trips and activities include the temples of Chishakuin, Tofukuji and Sanjusangendo, the Kyoto National Museum, plus plenty of nearby shopping opportunities – including a famous road of antique shops – Nishiki Market and, if travelling to Japan with children, the nearby Toei Movie Land, as well as all the other historic highlights of Kyoto.
The depth of onsite facilities at Hyatt Regency Kyoto is, in fact, one of its main highlights. Nowhere is this truer than when perusing the spa’s list of treatments and rejuvenating therapies, from acupuncture to traditional Shiatsu and everything in between. There’s even a special program here which combines your specific treatment plan with healthy lunches and snacks, designed to maximise their overall effects. Elsewhere you will find a well-equipped gym; babysitting, concierge and dry-cleaning services; a gift shop and gardens; room service; Wi-Fi; complimentary transfers from JR Kyoto Station on request if you need them and a DVD library of all the latest titles to keep kids entertained.
