Sea views, a private beach, personal service and minimalist multi-level suites surrounded by native foliage; all-inclusive Capella Lodge is a dreamy Australian retreat on Lord Howe Island that you may not want to leave at all!
The beauty of Capella Lodge is that while this is considered the most exclusive luxury resort on Lord Howe Island, it also feels remarkably natural and at ease with its surrounds, which is no easy task.
The hot water, for example, is generated with the help of solar panels, rooms are ventilated using a coastal breeze and the staff here even plant trees around the island if areas are suffering undue erosion. In the guestrooms, you’ll then find heavy granite sinks and waterfall-style taps, a décor scheme of gentle colour tones and bamboo plus huge French windows that bring the outdoors in, best enjoyed from your bay window or furnished balcony. Such connection with the island’s pristine landscapes is every bit a part of the package while staying at Capella Lodge, from the nearby birdwatching walks and forest trails to taking out the lodge’s glass-bottom boat or heading off to snorkel the reefs by Lover’s Cove; it all goes hand-in-hand here.
It’s also worth noting that although Capella Lodge is a family-friendly property, they do operate an over 10’s-only policy, meaning that other Lord Howe Island hotels may be more suitable if travelling to Australia with children, though those that do stay in this idyllic beachside resort are treated to an even more serene ambience. And that serenity can be absorbed from the comfort of your suite or while indulging in Capella’s outdoor infinity pool, sundeck and Jacuzzi, all of which could not be better placed for admiring those dramatic coastal views.
They do operate a small spa here, making for a nice interlude between outdoor excursions and decadent meals. With a fine dining restaurant serving delectable dishes sourced from either the island, an onsite kitchen-garden or surrounding ocean waters (and super service to back it up), there’s no doubting that Capella Lodge is almost in a league of its own if seeking a boutique retreat on Lord Howe Island.

The nine exclusive suites at Capella Lodge certainly adopt the same natural feel you find throughout the property, though manage it by also being minimalist and modern spaces. The colour scheme in each is as neutral as it gets, all white and cream, wood and glass, while amenities come in the form of carefully placed flat-screen TVs, DVD players, a music system and minibar. All rooms also stock Capella Spa toiletries, beach towels bathrobes and backpacks. There’s a furnished terrace or balcony and, for some, either an outdoor Jacuzzi or private plunge pool. These are all uncluttered, contemporary areas of edgy wall art, walk-in showers (some found outdoors), standalone bathtubs and not a lamp or ornament out of place. Certain options are then more suitable for families or groups thanks to multiple rooms, and others nicely intimate, ideal for couples.
Capella Restaurant, Bar and Gowers Terrace
The gastronomic experience at Capella Lodge is all rolled into one delightful indoor space surrounded by glass and one even more appealing outdoor area, Gowers Terrace, elevated as it is above the treeline, dotted with sunbeds and a Jacuzzi, both of which make for picture-perfect afternoon or evening cocktails. Throughout the day, after a freshly prepared breakfast of fruits, homemade bread and daily-changing hot options, you can help yourself to nuts, pastries, fruit tea and coffee, or ask for a personally prepared picnic (not included) if heading out on a romantic daytrip. Come evening, one of the great Australian eating experiences awaits, as after canapes you’re treated to a seasonal fine dining menu of dishes crafted from whatever has been recently sourced from the island itself and surrounding ocean waters; outstanding gourmet cuisine in every sense.
Activities and Entertainment
Lord Howe Island is a delight to explore on both land and sea, with offshore coral reefs to snorkel over, scuba diving and fun glass-bottom boat tours available directly from Capella Lodge, thanks to their very own vessel. There’s the lagoon at Lover’s Bay and surfing at Blinkie’s Beach too, while back on dry land popular outings include birdwatching tours and forest walks, perhaps a more challenging trek up Mount Gower or, for something altogether more serene, a round of golf on the nearby 9-hole course.
The main attraction of staying at Capella Lodge is not so much in any big hitting resort-style facilities, but instead the spellbinding coastal location and effortless elegance of the lodge itself. You may struggle with mobile phone signal here, though the property does provide Wi-Fi throughout, a library of books and board games, DVDs, a beautiful infinity pool overlooking the ocean, small single-room spa, gardens, terraces and a private beach to enjoy.
