Around three and a half hours south of Perth, the Margaret River region rewards travellers with golden stretches of sand, fascinating caves to explore, charming galleries and a collection of outstanding wineries.
Although growing just 3% of Australia’s grapes, the area produces over 20% of the country’s premium quality wines. Tour the top-class vineyards, cellar doors and craft breweries here, and make sure to save some time for at least a few tastings. The superb wine scene complements the region’s excellent gourmet offerings. Browse countless bars, restaurants and cafés showcasing local fare; if you time your visit right you could attend the Margaret River Gourmet Escape, which attracts chefs and foodies from around the world.
As excellent as the food and drink is, there’s so much more to explore here. Head south to visit Mammoth Cave, where you can see ancient fossils and palaeontological wonders aplenty. For snorkelling, surfing and swimming, we recommend a trip to the charming Yallingup area. To make the most of the area’s Indian Ocean coastline, head to Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park for a range of wildlife, azure lagoons, rugged cliffs and beautiful beaches. Another inspiring natural sight is to be found at the Boranup Karri Forest, full of towering trees and beautiful flora.
