A luxury New Zealand hotel in a league of its own, Eagles Nest is a true den of decadence with five individually designed boutique villas

Eagles Nest is without a doubt one of the world’s most esteemed hotels, comprising a clutch of contemporary villas that cling to the hills, rising above the coastline in the far north of New Zealand.

This far-flung pleasure palace specialises in the luxurious, with services that go above and beyond, plus gracious staff to match.

Nature plays a central role at Eagles Nest, surrounded as it is by 75 acres of native bush and immaculate beaches on a peninsula that stretches into the Bay of Islands. This pristine backdrop is hailed throughout the estate, as each exquisite villa has been fitted with huge glass windows and expansive terraces to maximise the view. They all have their own personality, design and architecture, as well as private Jacuzzis, kitchens, living/dining spaces, and swimming pools (except the one-bedroom villa). This truly is the height of luxury in a secluded sanctuary of North Island, New Zealand.

While Eagles Nest doesn’t have a restaurant, bar, communal pool or spa, that isn’t to say it doesn’t offer all of this.

Instead of a main eatery at the hotel, each villa is perfectly equipped for self-catering or, better yet, personal chef experiences, who come to your kitchen and rustle up a storm to be enjoyed in the dining room or on your outdoor deck; arguably more exclusive than sharing a restaurant with other hotel guests. There are also personal trainers,

beauty/massage therapists and butlers available, so you needn’t even step foot out of your villa if you don’t wish to, and still live in the lap of luxury. However, with the immense natural playground that is the Bay of Islands right on your doorstep, rest assured there’s something to lure you out into this stunning destination at some point or other!

There are five sumptuous villas at Eagles Nest, every one completely different to the next with their own unique designs, layout, and style – all are downright jaw-dropping. Take your pick between one, three and four-bedroom options, though expect the same high standards in each: sophisticated contemporary décor, well-appointed living spaces, private entrances and modern kitchens. All flaunt infinity pools apart from the one-bedroom First Light Temple, although this villa does have an irresistible Jacuzzi; and all are equipped with air-conditioning, except the cleverly ventilated Sacred Space. All villas go on to provide the following mod-cons for every guest: Wi-Fi, home theatre, minibar, Nespresso machine, BBQ, outdoor deck, bathrobes, slippers, CD & DVD library and a bottle of Louis Roederer Champagne on arrival. Fresh fruit and breakfast items are replenished daily, and at your request, the hotel can arrange a private butler, personal chef, personal trainer, beauty/massage therapist, chauffeur and personal shopper. Prepare to be exceedingly spoilt.

First Light Temple

First Light Temple

The only one-bedroom villa at Eagles Nest is perfectly suited to couples and honeymooners, a romantic hideaway comprised of a mezzanine bedroom surrounded by glass on all sides, for panoramic views of the treetops and islands. Downstairs, a spacious living room features a fireplace, so too the outdoor patio, which is connected with bifold doors and also flaunts a BBQ and Jacuzzi; note that this is the only villa without a swimming pool.
The Eyrie

The Eyrie

The three bedrooms at the Eyrie each have en suite bathrooms, and two of them boast views across the sea from their king-size beds. The wraparound deck also flaunts far-reaching vistas, thanks to the Eyrie’s position high on the hill, enveloped by verdant plants. Whether travelling as a group of friends or family, the amenities of this sleek villa – a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, kitchen and living/dining area – promise a luxurious stay.
Eagle Spirit

Eagle Spirit

Another three-bedroom gem of a villa, Eagle Spirit is stunning in design with a long terrace positioned above the treetops, fronted by an 18m infinity pool – both gazing out to sea. Each bedroom has an en suite, all face the same stunning landscape and benefitting from sliding glass doors onto the terrace. An open-plan kitchen, dining and living room tops it off perfectly.
Sacred Space

Sacred Space

An incredible, wood-clad sanctuary with four bedrooms (one found on the upper floor), four bathrooms (three of which are en suite) and a clever, attractive design. The living area features a glass roof, and instead of air conditioning this villa has smart air cooling with screened windows and doors – a hit with eco warriors. The outdoor zone is then a tropical paradise, complete with wooden decking, a huge infinity pool, Jacuzzi, plus a BBQ, sauna, outdoor shower and hammock.
Rahimoana

Rahimoana

Meaning ‘Sun God over the ocean’, Rahimoana is without a doubt the most impressive of all; a lavish four-bedroom villa dressed in white and cool grey with its own helipad, private beach, wine cellar, gym, sauna and 25m infinity pool, all on a private 44-acre headland carpeted in plantlife. What’s more, guests of Rahimoana are given the keys to a Porsche Cayenne, and have a villa manager on-hand to tend to their every whim. This is a world-class villa.
In-villa Dining

In-villa Dining

At Eagles Nest, there is no restaurant or bar as such, but the joy comes instead by self-catering in your lavish kitchen; or indeed having a top chef come and do all the work for you! Breakfast is provided – check in your fridge to see it filled with eggs, smoked salmon, bacon, yoghurt and juices, along with pantry items like cereal, bread, tea and coffee. What could be better than starting the day out on the terrace, tucking into breakfast with that enchanting sea view to accompany you? Then, when it comes to drinks, you’ll find a range of alcoholic beverages in the fridge, though note that these come at an additional cost.

While it may be tempting to linger in your luxury villa all day long, there’s a raft of cultural and active pursuits to haul you out of the house. You have top-of-the-range mountain bikes at your disposal, great for getting out and about amongst nature, and the hotel can also arrange activities such as horse riding, watersports, fishing and golf – hop on a helicopter to zip over to one of five fantastic courses nearby. You can also have them fly you over to top regional highlights such as 90 Mile Beach, Cape Reinga and the Waipoa Forest, or anywhere else that takes your fancy. Then there is, of course, plenty of wine tasting to enjoy in and around Russell, as well as upscale restaurants, both handicrafts and farmers’ markets, plus some beautiful, unspoilt beaches at your fingertips.

The facilities of Eagles Nest, rather than being shared by all guests, are exclusive to each villa – please read our room descriptions to find out more. For example, four out of five villas possess swimming pools, others have saunas and, in Rahimoana, you’ll find a gym, wine cellar and private beach. No matter which villa you opt for, once at the hotel you can ask the concierge to organise a personal chef, masseuse, chauffeur, butler, personal shopper and trainer; everything is bespoke and exclusive here at Eagles Nest.
