Isolated, exclusive and easy on the eye, the all-apartment Bay of Many Coves Resort provides the quintessential New Zealand experience, found on the shores of Queen Charlotte Sound.
The Bay of Many Coves Resort has it all.
Accessible only by helicopter or boat, this luxury waterfront lodge is ideally placed, wonderfully well-run by effortlessly friendly staff and offering easy access to the countless outdoor activities, wildlife opportunities and most scenic landscapes of the Marlborough Sound.
Nothing quite compares to the remote beauty of this part of the world, and at the Bay of Many Coves you have one of the best New Zealand lodges to explore it all from, and it’s eco-friendly too.
This is a place where, after a day of birdwatching, kayaking, wildlife walks or perhaps a boat trip in search of dolphins, the entrancing sunset views over Queen Charlotte Sound, on whose banks the hotel sits, can then be enjoyed from your private terrace or Jacuzzi; bliss.
The style of the property is that of an upmarket, contemporary eco-lodge. So while the windows are large, décor minimalist and bathrooms fully modern, the resort is almost entirely constructed in softwood – from the suites to the sundeck – blending harmoniously into its verdant forest backdrop as a result.
There’s a swimming pool, hot tub and sun patio that all look out across the water here, though the supreme views can also be admired from each of the 11 apartments, both restaurants and onsite café too.
Such connection with the stunning landscapes surrounding the Bay of Many Coves goes hand-in-hand with the overall five-star experience to be enjoyed during your stay, from the seasonally changeable fine dining menu to the endless outdoor activities available, it all paints a pretty picture indeed.
Bay of Many Coves is also a family-friendly resort in Marlborough and although there is no specific kids’ club or play area, the great outdoors and fun to be had around the region will undoubtedly keep them entertained.
The same goes for adults, of course, with not only the guided tours and watersports but an onsite spa and the gourmet cuisine, paired wine and scintillating setting of the hotel all feeling decidedly grown-up.

The 11 apartments and 1 suite at the Bay of Many Coves are all delightfully straightforward, though not lacking in either size or comfort levels. All come with king-size beds, a private deck, well-equipped kitchenette and separate living area as standard, as well as artisan eco-friendly toiletries, a ceiling fan (no air-conditioning as an aim to reduce noise pollution) and showers. You’ll find Wi-Fi throughout, and waterfront views from various heights as each individual apartment adopts a slightly different position on the hill. The décor scheme is one of simplicity first, so natural wooden hues, white and slate grey linens, curtains and cushions on the sofa dominate. Ornaments and extra little touches are typically New Zealand, such as Maori-etched oars or traditional artworks, with the star of the show ultimately being those irreplaceable views and the abundance of space in each.
The Foredeck Restaurant
The fine dining to be found at award-winning Foredeck Restaurant is nothing short of astonishing, each plate appearing as a true work of art in its own right. The menu is always seasonal and locally sourced, with once humble ingredients being transformed into a renowned gastronomic experience of inventive flavour fusions, accompanied by the best Marlborough wines. Unlike the refined food being served, the room itself is relatively relaxed with simple décor and nicely spaced tables letting the food do the talking. Note that The Foredeck is adults-only after 7pm.
The Kumatage Guest Lounge
A beautifully laidback spot to grab brunch or lunch by the bay, there are few better places to enjoy your morning coffee with such epic surrounding views.
Coffee, sandwiches and snacks aplenty at Bight Café, a relaxed area situated next to the hotel’s jetty for waterside drinks or a quick lunch. There’s a respectable menu on offer at Bight Café, and a cold afternoon beer as the sun goes down is also hard to resist.
Activities and Entertainment
Outdoor activities come aplenty here, particularly watersports as dinghies, kayaks and stand-up paddle-boards are all provided by the hotel. There are then numerous scenic walking trails all around the property, including tracks to hidden waterfalls, hiking routes, birdwatching and wildlife trails plus photography tours, swimming and sailing to be done. Slightly further afield, you can visit the Queen Charlotte Track, take a wine tasting tour or even go dolphin spotting in the Marlborough Sounds.
There is plenty to keep you occupied while staying at the Bay of Many Coves Resort, with a cinema and games room, outdoor swimming pool plus sun loungers, Jacuzzi and onsite spa as well as other essentials such as Wi-Fi, room service and a friendly concierge team. The hotel also features a helipad and private jetty, the only two ways to arrive at the Bay of Many Coves
