Located on the tiny island of Canouan, which is just two miles long by a mile wide, Mandarin Oriental, Canouan is part of a stunning estate that seamlessly blends into three hundred lush island acres.
It may be small but this island enjoys a long history, reflected by a beautifully restored 17th-century church situated at the heart of this resort, where you’ll also discover a stunning unspoiled seascape with secluded coves and beaches.
Accommodation options are as spacious as they are luxurious, ranging from romantic One Bedroom Beach Suites to impressive three-storey four-bedroom lagoon villas with facilities such as a full-service kitchen and a private infinity pool that looks out to an incredible lagoon view.
There is plenty to do at this luxurious resort, whose Atlantic side is buffered by a coral reef that provides some of the Caribbean’s most diverse diving and snorkelling. There’s also a Jim Fazio-designed golf course, a luxury superyacht marina, and a sumptuous Spa to enjoy, while children will love the diverse activities on offer at Pirates Kids Club which has its own full-sized pool.
Dining is a delight. There are four restaurants, ranging from the family-friendly Lagoon Cafe which serves Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, to fine dining at one of two sophisticated restaurants. At Asianne, you can enjoy pan Asian cuisine while watching your food be prepared through the open kitchen, or head to TIDES Bar & Grill for international dishes with a Caribbean flare while overlooking the reef-protected lagoon. Opt for a night-cap at Turtles to finish your evening off in style. Sample a cocktail from the extensive menu, while cool jazz plays in the background.
The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Canouan is a must-visit, with treatment suites on the water and in the hillside overlooking the ocean providing a picturesque and utterly peaceful escape. A retreat for both body and soul, the ESPA spa also offers guided yoga and meditation classes, as well as a fully-equipped fitness centre.
26 suites and 6 hotel villas.
This family-friendly restaurant serves Mediterranean inspired cuisine fit to suit all palates in the family. Enjoy tapas and stone-baked pizzas aplenty.
Asianne serves up sophisticated pan-Asian cuisine, which you can watch being prepared (the restaurant has an open kitchen). Bright yellow banquettes and royal blue chairs contrast the resort’s pink hues.
TIDES Bar + Grill serves up international dishes with a Caribbean flare. Overlooking the lagoon, enjoy seafood and steaks amongst a palette of pale yellow and powder blue.
The pool bar is open all day and serves up both wonderful sea views and Peruvian, Nikkei-inspired dishes in the cool poolside cabana.
Head to Turtles for a nightcap, with cool jazz as your backdrop to an exquisite cocktail.
Activities and Entertainment
This luxurious resort is full to the brim with activities to keep you busy. The coral reef running along the lagoon offers some of the Caribbeans’ best and most diverse underwater life, whether you go diving, snorkelling, or just swimming in it. Canouan means ‘island of tortoises’, and they really mean it. You can also ride atop the waves, enjoying the superyacht marina, or retreat to hover just atop the waters in the ESPA spa, whose treatment suites, on the water, offer meditative space for some pampering me-time.
The spa also offers some guided meditation and yoga classes, alongside the well-equipped gym. Park the kids at Pirates Kids Club, where they’ll have a ball with the amazing amount of activities on offer (including their own full-size pool), and take to the resort’s 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Jim Fazio, which climbs from sea level to a dramatic 840ft, at the rim of an extinct volcano. The 13th hole is 590 foot up - the island’s second highest point, after Mount Royal. Golf doesn’t get more beautiful.
If neither golf nor relaxing in the spa float your boat, indulge in some cooking classes to inspire your palate and up your skill set.
Enjoy the plentiful activities and facilities on offer. Take to the seas (just like the actors of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, which were filmed nearby did) on Hobie cats, windsurfing equipment and kayaks, or go looking for the peaceful and serene hawksbill turtles in the clear waters.
Alternatively, take your rod in hand for some impressive deep sea fishing excursions. Pamper yourself in the spa, with nine perfectly positioned treatment rooms, let the kids enjoy themselves at kids club or youth yoga, sort out your handicap on the stunning 18-hole golf course designed by Jim Fazio, or keep active in the fitness centre, taking a yoga class, or lapping up and down the swimming pool.
