Asa Wright Nature Centre

Asa Wright Nature Centre

Asa Wright Nature Centre is a 'not for profit' Trust that is located deep in Arima and Aripo Valleys in the Northern Ranges on the tropical island of Trinidad. Created in 1967 to protect part of the Arima Valley and for the conservation and protection of the unique bird and wildlife found in the area.

The origin of Trinidad and proximity to South America has created a variety of habitats and has resulted in an extremely diverse biota. The island boasts an impressive list of flora and fauna with 97 species of native mammals, 55 reptiles, 400 species of birds, over 600 species of butterflies and 2200 species of flowering plants. Bird species include Squirrel Cockatoos, Toucans and Tufted Coquettes along with half a dozen species of Hummingbirds.

The main facilities are found on a former cocoa-coffee-citrus plantation, surrounded by deep tropical rainforest. Professional naturalist guide conduct guided walks in the morning and afternoon that last 1.5 hours and allows you to view this unique environment and learn about the biodiversity of the area. Watch the birdlife and butterflies from the viewing gallery or relax on the Jade Vine Verandah or Terrace and enjoy a buffet lunch in the main dining room. The cottage styled accommodations are located close to the main building and offer basic comfort and private facilities, along with screened verandahs and are cooled by ceiling fans. After dinner the guides will conduct interesting video presentations or offer night walks to observe the fascinating nocturnal activity at the centre.
