Evian Resort is a sprawling holiday destination in the French Alps, overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Geneva from its enviable location in the spa town of Evian-Les-Bains.
Its proximity to the mountains makes it ideal to visit year-round: whether coming for the ski slopes of nearby Thollon-Les-Memises, Bernex and the Portes du Soleil (the latter boasting 600km of powdery pistes); or to enjoy more balmy temperatures through the rest of the year, with many outdoor adventures on your doorstep.
The Hotel Royal and Ermitage Hotel afford their guests access to Evian Resort’s impressive facility offerings. There’s the Evian Golf Club, with its 18-hole course set against the backdrop of Lake Geneva, two spas, tennis courts, various kids clubs, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, casino, concert hall and team of activity and culture specialists to help you get the most out of your stay, whether you want sporting experiences or to dip your toe into the artistic scene here.
Hotel Royal is the five-star option of the two, blessed with 150 rooms and suites – many flaunting views of Lake Geneva. This resort has a sophisticated feel thanks to its stately design and décor, immaculate gardens and elegant communal spaces. It’s also where you’ll find more of the resort’s amenities, including a Michelin-starred restaurant helmed by chef Patrice Vander and the Evian Source Spa, with a superlative hydrotherapy circuit and treatments; it’s also only accessible for guests of the Royal.
Meanwhile, Ermitage Hotel is the more rustic choice, awarded four stars rather than five but sporting its own fair share of highlights. The 80 rooms and suites are more muted in their style, although many do offer lovely lake views and balconies. This particular hideaway is great for families, providing plenty of entertainment and activities for children within the various kid's clubs: one for babies, another younger children, and teens too. From cookery to crafts, swimming to skiing, there’s so much they can get involved with. Adults are certainly not left out, however, particularly with the Ermitage’s Quatre Terres Spa: an eco-certified wellness centre, one of just three in France, which focuses on natural energies from clay, stones, crystals and earth to restore and rejuvenate.
So whichever of these two sublime Lake Geneva hotels it is, you simply can’t go wrong with a stay at the all-encompassing Evian Resort.
Expect contemporary, unfussy décor in the Hotel Royal’s 150 rooms and suites, with flashes of yellow and blue injecting the space with character. They are positioned to face the leafy park or sparkling Lake Geneva, and come with king-size or twin beds, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, slippers, flat-screen TVs, minibars and Fragonard toiletries. The Hotel Ermitage’s 80 guestrooms, on the other hand, offer L’Occitane toiletries, bathrobes, slippers, an iPod dock, minibar and double, king-size or twin beds; some flaunt views of Lake Geneva, while others have restricted vistas or look out over the garden.
This Michelin-starred restaurant serves upscale plates across its a la carte and set menus, designed by renowned chef Patrice Vander. The dining room is found in the Hotel Royal of Evian Resort, with windows and an al fresco terrace both bestowing views of Lake Geneva.
Whipping up predominantly French cuisine (with an Italian buffet on Friday evenings, just for good measure), La Table celebrates local ingredients and recipes, transforming them into delectable dishes for breakfast, dinner, and brunch at the weekend. This restaurant is located in Hotel Ermitage.
Take your pick from global favourites at this light-filled brasserie, with huge windows that look out onto the greenery outside Hotel Royal.
This laidback lounge and restaurant in the Hotel Ermitage is the ideal place to sip a cup of coffee, indulge in afternoon tea or tuck into the set lunch menu, paired with a fine wine.
Le Bar at Hotel Royal is open all day until midnight, with a creative cocktail menu (incorporating Evian water, no less) and outdoor terrace.
Expect live piano music, ladies’ happy hour, classic cocktails and martinis at this Hotel Ermitage bar.
Savour a delectable spread of Mediterranean delights at the lunch buffet here next to the swimming pool, or simply get some liquid refreshment in-between dips.
This casual poolside bar is dotted with comfy rattan furniture scattered on the sun-dappled terrace, an ideal place to stop for a chilled drink or nibble on a salad at any time of day.
Activities and Entertainment
The Evian Resort’s location on the shores of Lake Geneva in the Alps, means that there’s so much to do when it comes to outdoor pursuits. Go skiing in winter at the nearby resorts of Thollon-les-Memises and Bernex (both just 15 minutes away), or venture a bit further to the vast Portes du Soleil, making the most of the resort’s own ski boutique to rent or buy the gear you need. In the warmer months, you can take to the water for rafting, sailing, kayaking and fishing. Or, head into the skies above with a paragliding or helicopter tour. If you prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground however, go hiking through the stunning mountains and admire views of the one and only Lake Geneva; it’s a breathtaking backdrop for all manner of walks and treks.
The Evian Resort is home to its own golf club, flaunting an 18-hole course, academy and clubhouse, with views of Lake Geneva. It also has not one, but two sumptuous spas: Evian Source and Quatre Terres, the latter an organic and ecologically-friendly wellness centre, the former complete with hydrotherapy pools and La Prairie products (exclusive for guests of the Royal). There are then tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, plus kids clubs for younger generations to enjoy, providing a huge range of activities for teens and little ones alike, plus a creche for under-threes. Meanwhile, grown-ups can try their luck in the onsite casino, kitted out with 250 slot machines, blackjack, stud poker as well as restaurants and bars to chill out in. Amazingly, the Evian Resort even has its own concert hall – the Grange au Lac – clad all in wood and seating 1,200 spectators who come to watch live orchestras perform.
Évian-Les-Bains, the Alps, France. The Evian Resort and its two luxury hotels, Ermitage and Royal, are located in the town of Évian-Les-Bains on the shores of Lake Geneva, the home of Evian water. Although the resort is on the French side of the border, the closest airport is Geneva, Switzerland, which is 1 hour 40 minutes away by car; 45 minutes by boat via the lake. Meanwhile, the ski resorts of the Alps are only 15 minutes away.
