Unwind in style at Mountain Shadows, a five-star golf resort in Scottsdale overlooked by Camelback Mountain with outdoor desert adventures and Phoenix city culture on its doorstep.
If you’re looking for an indulgent Arizona holiday amid spectacular scenery with the option of both outdoor pursuits and city sights, look no further than the sumptuous resort of Mountain Shadows.
Set within the welcome shade of Camelback Mountain, this reclaimed mid-century hotel is surrounded by the landscapes of the Sonoran Desert with fabulous golf courses and the sights of Scottsdale and Phoenix a short drive away.
Rebuilt in 2017 but in keeping with its 1950s retro design, the clean white lines and plush contemporary interiors of Mountain Shadows juxtapose with the weathered desert landscape to striking effect. Cool, bright rooms, suites and expansive residences are surrounded by the undulating greens of the hotel golf course, while the two central pools with cabanas are just the ticket for cooling off.
Beyond the hotel’s own spectacular, 18-hole golf course are several others, including championship courses at both Camelback Golf Club and The Phoenician, while hiking trails out in the desert are just a few minutes’ drive away, and cultural pursuits are also close at hand. The galleries and boutiques of Downtown Scottsdale arts district are just a few miles away, as are sights such as Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s former home, or major museums in Phoenix city centre. That said, Mountain Shadows features its very own gallery, showcasing Arizona artwork and putting on exciting events whereby guests of the hotel can chat with the artists about their work while sipping wine and snacking on canapés.

Named after the founding year of Paradise Valley, Hearth ’61 is a celebration of local life and simple, regional ingredients. Breakfast and brunch comprise a choice of eggs alongside cereals and salads while the lunch menu is a tasty array of starters, burgers and salads. For dinner, a different roast is rustled up every day in the stone oven, from Niman Ranch pork chops to roasted monkfish. With full length windows and a large patio, you’ll want to take your meal at a leisurely pace as you marvel at the spectacular desert scenery.
Rusty’s at the Short Course
Affording serene views of the golf course from both the indoor lounge and shaded patio, this is the place to come to fortify yourself before or after a round of golf. For the early risers, breakfast is on offer from 6:30am. Burgers, hot dogs, salads and sandwiches are on the lunch menu while happy hour cocktails go down a treat as you ponder that last tricky putt on the 18th green.
Activities and Entertainment
First and foremost is the golf course, a thing of beauty to behold. The verdant rolling greens punctuated with palm trees and playful water features contrast dramatically with the rugged views of Camelback Mountain. Designed for amateurs and experts alike, this gorgeous 18-hole, 3-par course provides a fun and relatively swift round of golf. So, if you’re looking to channel the inner Tiger Woods in you, then jump in the Tesla Model X courtesy car and head over to Camelback Golf Club, a 36-hole championship golf course offering special rates and preferred access to Mountain Shadow guests. The courtesy car will also drop you off at the challenging hiking trails up Camelback Mountain or, if you’re after a day of pampering, the Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa. Get acquainted with the local art scene at the hotel gallery, displaying new works every two months, or head into Downtown Scottsdale, a cultural mecca with museums, galleries, fancy boutiques and top-notch restaurants.
The Citizen’s Club incorporates a whole variety of fitness and relaxation facilities. The pools are probably where you’ll want to head first. Set on two levels with a walkway in-between, the water gently cascades from the top pool to the lower one. Take up residence on one of the loungers or, for a more private poolside retreat, hire out one of the cabanas; soak in the hot tub if the Arizona sun isn’t quite at its peak. Then, overlooking the pool is the fitness centre. The wide choice of equipment and inspiring views out over the turquoise water and towards Camelback Mountain are motivation enough, or join one of the 60-minute classes including aerial yoga, Pilates, early morning runs and total body workouts. Whether you’ve been sweating by the pool or in the gym, stop by The Juice Bar for light snacks, a vitamin-packed refresher or something with a little more kick, perhaps!
