Lake Tahoe

Straddling both the California and Nevada borders, the beautiful Lake Tahoe is a perfect spot for a few nights stay on a self-drive holiday. A skiing destination in the winter, Tahoe transforms itself into an outdoor activity haven, appealing to all people and ages. Easily accessible from San Francisco and Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe has more going on than meets the eye.

We recommend staying in Squaw Valley, home to the 1960 Winter Olympics, or Incline Village in North Tahoe. Spend lazy days on the many beaches around the lake, particularly good ones, are the beach in North Shore, D.L. Bliss State Park and Sugar Pine State Park. For a more activity-based holiday, there are golf courses, mountain bikes to rent, hiking trails and boat excursions available. For some great photo opportunities, take the cable car in Squaw Valley, the gondola ride at Heavenly Resort in South Lake Tahoe or visit the Emerald Bay viewpoint.

Aside from the many restaurants, nights in Lake Tahoe in the summer could take you to casinos in the South or the beach for a performance at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival.
