Situated only an hour and a half’s drive from the northern California gateway of San Francisco, Sacramento is the less visited jewel of the California Valley and a perfect stop for a couple of nights en route from San Francisco, Napa Valley and Sonoma County, and Yosemite National Park. Bursting with history, discover remnants of its past in downtown Sacramento at Sutter’s Fort, built by a Swiss man and now an insight into the 1840s, as well as Old Sacramento complete with fantastic eateries and the California State Railroad Museum. Discover the city’s roots and gold rush history, with walks down the wooden boardwalks of Old Sacramento and even try your hand at gold panning.
A highlight of any visit is a look around the Capitol Museum and Park, for free. Take the children to the Sacramento Zoo whilst adults can try a local craft beer, and be sure to taste ice cream from one of the city’s well known stores. Outdoor activities include white water rafting, cycling on the American River Bike Trail and golfing. Situated so close to the state’s wine country, Sacramento too has it's own urban wineries and also some 150 wines just over an hour's drive away.
