You may not instantly associate ‘Big Easy’ with the kind of European-inspired regal décor that’s found inside the InterContinental New Orleans, but everything from its marble-clad entrance lobby to the antique chests in certain guestrooms feels just as fitting as the jazz cafés, parks and historic streets that surround it.
In no small part, this is down to the InterContinental’s French Quarter location, as some of the main highlights, famous boulevards and cultural attractions of New Orleans are all within a short walk, leaving you in the thick of the action – albeit with a fine dining restaurant and sophisticated suite to return to each evening!
The accommodation at InterContinental New Orleans certainly follows this pattern, as thick carpets, luxe king-size beds and polished wooden furniture are the grown-up order of the day in every room category, though some also feature a furnished balcony and/or separate lounge area too; priceless touches.
Bathrooms are modern with a bathtub and separate rain shower in most, while the top-range options also come with a kitchen for extra independence, though don’t linger too long as onsite restaurants Trenasse and Pete’s are both atmospheric, fine dining delights.
One of the real highlights at InterContinental New Orleans is then its rooftop swimming pool and surrounding sun patio, complete with poolside wait service. Although being enveloped by a protective wall which somewhat limits the view, this is no bad thing when needing a few hours away from the bustle of the city.
You’ll also find a gym and various top-rate service here, babysitting and a superb concierge giving the InterContinental New Orleans a little bit of everything: great French Quarter location, balconied guestrooms, two terrific restaurants and of course, the pool.
Guestrooms and suites at the InterContinental New Orleans are grander than most, all polished wooden furniture, marble-topped and tiled bathrooms, thick carpets and solid king-size beds. Some feature a furnished balcony which is a real treat, while other larger options also come with a separate lounge area and kitchen, though all include a coffee maker, HDTV, minibar, climate control, iPod docks and either a bath and rain shower combo, or separate deep-soak tub.
Pete’s restaurant and bar offers a fully contemporary space in terms of its eclectic furnishings, all purple velvet dining chairs and 50s style sofas, though also interesting murals and artworks that depict various scenes from throughout the region’s history. Food here is just as mixed, it’s all fine dining though very Louisiana too, with breakfast coming in the form of a fresh and tasty buffet while main meals later in the day range from Peruvian ceviche to shrimp and grits (a New Orleans staple), wood-fired pizza or Mexican quesadillas – this is cosmopolitan comfort food the way it should be!
Think fresh seafood – lots of oysters, locally sourced produce and a well-stocked bar of good wines and something a little stronger for those after dinner drinks. The space itself is also a classic American bar-style room of dark wood and moody lighting, for a real Louisiana affair – especially when the live music is playing.
As well as room service, the InterContinental New Orleans offers a tasty selection of poolside treats for those afternoons in the sun, whether a fresh waldorf salad or gourmet Italian BLT, perhaps nothing more than a Martini cocktail or two!
Activities and Entertainment
The InterContinental New Orleans is in a fantastic location near the French Quarter, meaning a host of the city’s most interesting outdoor spaces such as Lafayette Square and City Park, top restaurants, shopping avenues and bars are all within walking distance. Also very nearby are the Clay and Franklin Monuments, Louisiana Maritime and Jazz Museums (among many others), the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and Uptown New Orleans Historic District a little further afield, to name just a few. In short, the day trips, New Orleans highlights, shopping, restaurants, music venues and best evening haunts are all on your doorstep here, so too good transport links from nearby Union Station.
When it comes to onsite facilities, the main highlight of the InterContinental New Orleans hotel is undoubtedly its rooftop pool and surround sun patio as, although walled in to protect you from the road below, this is a treat for any property in this part of town. There is also a nicely modern gym and lots of services such as babysitting and concierge, valet parking and limo/private car hire, 24-hour room service and dry-cleaning too.
