Holidays to Argentina offer incredible diversity without leaving the country’s wide borders, from galloping across the pampas and shopping in Buenos Aires’ upscale boutiques. If you’re looking for a holiday with variety then Argentina is a winning choice, for its landscapes are staggering, its food famously delicious and its opportunity for adventure almost limitless; and there’s certainly plenty of room for it, with the country stretching 3,650 kilometres from tip to tail.
Most Argentina holidays start in Buenos Aires, the classiest capital in South America. The loud, Latin-flavoured metropolis has wide boulevards flanked with Colonial, Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings reminiscent of European cities. Many of the city’s neighbourhoods have been gentrified, bringing a raft of luxurious hotels and restaurants to Buenos Aires, though it remains distinctly traditional at heart and you’ll still find neighbourhoods where tango is danced on street corners. Private tango lessons can help you to learn the steps, and we’d recommend following your class with a parilla - there’s nothing more Argentinian than a steak dinner, especially when cooked over a traditional asado barbecue.
Outside of its attractive cities, Argentina’s countryside is brimming with bucolic beauty. Patagonia is an adventure-seeker’s paradise and many tours start from the city of Ushuaia, just across the ocean from Antarctica at the end of the Earth. Navigate between the ice floes in the Beagle Channel on a rigid inflatable boat or trek up snow-dusted mountains for a chance to view incredible wildlife and amazing panoramas. The seas off the southern coast are home to sea lions, penguins and whales, and if you time your trip well you may get to see all three. Further north, the city of El Calafate is the gateway to the Southern Patagonian ice fields and is an ideal base for visiting the ever-shifting Perito Moreno Glacier. Ice hiking is another pastime to try here, or you can head further north still to hike the trails around El Chaltén to the spectacular Fitzroy Mountain.
The country is famous for its horsemanship and the chance to take part in a high-octane game of polo or to gallop across the dusty pampas in the hoof prints of gauchos should not be missed. Gaucho country is also where you’ll find the origins of Argentina’s best-loved dish; cattle are reared in their thousands upon the lush plains, so if you enjoy a good steak you can guarantee the freshest and most tender beef with minimal food miles. Other Argentinian classics include goat dishes and fluffy pastry empanadas, but all dishes are best accompanied by one of the country’s full-bodied fine wines, such as Malbec, from the famous Mendoza vineyards.
