Guayaquil Holidays

The coastal port city of Guayaquil has, in the past, been thought of as the jumping off point for departures to the Galapagos Island, with most flights going via the city. However, thanks to its warm temperatures and pleasant weather, hospitable people and excellent seafood, the city has grown to become a destination in its own right.

No longer just the commercial centre of Ecuador, Guayaquil is a vibrant city with a number of high-rise skyscrapers that give it a ‘big city’ feel. However, the city’s riverfront plazas along the Rio Guayas provide the most authentic slice of life, where residents congregate to eat in the restaurants and converse with friends in the many bars. Here, the historic barrio of Las Peñas overlooks the river and provides an anchor both geographically and historically in the beating heart of the city.

Like many of Ecuador’s other cities, including Quito, Guayaquil has also seen an influx of regeneration cash which has developed its squares, parks and urban areas into attractive community spaces, while a theatre, film and arts scene flourishes thanks to a number of large universities.

For Ecuador holidays ending in Guayaquil, why not add on a coastal beach break for a few days of relaxation before flying home? Accessible from the city, the mid-Pacific coastline is home to tropical agriculture, dry forest, cloud forest, picturesque beaches and bays. Although not considered a traditional beach destination, coastal villages dotted along the coast provide a welcome retreat. With delicious seafood, several national parks and whale watching at certain times of the year, there are always options for non-beach goers too.
