This delightful, palazzo-style country house is bedecked in fine fabrics, tasteful furnishings and exudes a farmhouse-style luxury and comfort. Throwing the windows wide open to the breeze in the morning, you can look out across undulating hills of verdant green; northern Tuscany being so different in aesthetic to the famous arid golden browns of the south of the region. It is the Italy dreams are made of.
Immerse yourself in the daily life of rural Italy. The towns and villages of this region are filled with winding, cobbled streets, nonnas sat on their front steps stripping vegetables for lunch and talking to their neighbour. At lunch, everybody retreats inside from the heat; even the cats commit to a snooze in a shady corner. Cypress trees and olive groves decorate the hillsides, and old men play chess at the local cafe. Villa Barboleta allows you to get caught up in this heady world of Mediterranean living; a sedate lifestyle that has changed little over a hundred years.
But despite the wonderful surroundings, you would be forgiven for spending all your days lounging by the pool. Down a gentle slope from the pink house, succumbing slowly to the beautiful wallclimbers creeping up it with their big white blooms, is an ample pool, surrounded by comfortable pool loungers, and the jewel green gardens, which buzz and hum with butterflies and bumblebees at work whilst you make the most of this opportunity to relax.
The kitchen, living and dining spaces are most welcoming, providing both welcome retreat on a summer’s day and a comfortable and homely environment for those shoulder season nights when the dark comes a little earlier and the temperature falls. Grab a wrap and curl up on the comfortable sofas, or venture out onto the terrace to gaze up at the most wonderful canopy of stars you will ever see.
The three bedrooms are all air conditioned, and beautifully designed, making a stylish yet homely impression with carefully chosen fabrics and the most comfortable and crisp of bed linens. The master bedroom features a king-sized four poster, with en suite (with both bath and shower), double basins and a separate studio room, whilst the other two bedrooms are either double or twin (on request), sharing a bathroom with a shower.
Only a mile’s walk from Villa Barboleta is Ponte a Moriano, a charming little village complete with cafe, railway station and tennis club. Five miles further, you discover one of the jewels in Tuscany’s crown - the city of Lucca. Its rich history could fill a holiday alone; marvel at the heritage of the Medieval tower and the Gothic cathedral, before enjoying a people-watch at a cafe in the piazza. Lucca is not the only fabulous city in hailing distance of the villa, though - Pisa, Siena and Florence are all within an easy distance for a day trip, as are the beaches at Viareggio or Forte dei Marmi.
