Our 12-night flexible fly-drive along New South Wales Pacific Coast starts in Sydney where you will enjoy a small group tour of the city’s highlights, plus a cruise around the spectacular Sydney Harbour, hopping on and off along the route.

Your drive will then take you through some of Australia’s most beautiful landscapes, including the Hunter Valley Wine Region, the stunning unspoiled beaches of Port Stephens and inland lakes of Myall Lakes National Park. Drive through banana plantations, rainforests and along scenic coastal roads.

Enjoy time for relaxation at Byron Bay where you can stroll along pristine beaches, visit a surf school for surfing lessons or drive in to the Hinterland and hike through rainforests and visit alternative lifestyle villages such as Nimbin.

Cross the border from New South Wales to Queensland and follow the Gold Coast through Surfers Paradise, renowned for its long sandy beaches and exciting theme parks before ending in Queensland’s capital city of Brisbane.

Itinerary

Fly from the UK to Sydney. You may choose an extended stopover, with a few days in the Middle East, Far East or North America to break up the journey.

On your arrival in Sydney, you will be transferred by private car from the airport to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore Sydney at your own pace. Stroll along the waterfront of Darling Harbour or Circular Quay, visit Chinatown and wander through the cobbled streets of the historic Rocks district.

Orientate yourself with the city on our small group Sydney Panoramic Tour. Enjoy magnificent views of Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, visit the vibrant Kings Cross District, exclusive Double Bay and take in the panoramic harbour views at Dover Heights, after which you will visit Bondi Beach before returning to Darling Harbour via the trendy neighbourhood of Paddington and Oxford Street.

Sydney Harbour is the largest natural harbour in the world. Explore this expanse of water, the bays and exclusive neighbourhoods with your Captain Cook Hop on Hop Off ferry pass. Your pass allows you to alight at 11 locations on the harbour including Circular Quay, Taronga Zoo, Manly and Watsons Bay where we recommend stopping for lunch at Doyle’s Waterfront Restaurant. Stop at Luna Park for fantastic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House views.

A full day to explore the city further, such as travelling to the top of Sydney Tower for bird’s eye views of the city and harbour. Take a leisurely stroll through the impressive Sydney Botanical Gardens and stop for a picnic. Optional tours to the Blue Mountains can also be arranged.

Collect your rental car this morning and drive north across Sydney Harbour Bridge. Pass through Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park and over the Hawkesbury River to the Hunter Region, New South Wales premier wine country. There’s more to the area than wine tours; there are horse and mountain bike trails, helicopter and hot air balloon flights and plenty of gourmet dining opportunities.
Hotel – Hunter Valley Resort

Weather permitting, we recommend you take an early morning hot air balloon flight over the Hunter Valley before continuing your journey to the charming fishing village of Port Stephens. Here you can enjoy some relaxation time at one of the 26 beautiful beaches or take a boat cruise in search of bottlenose dolphins (and whales in season).
Hotel – Anchorage Resort

Continue your journey along the Pacific Highway to Myall Lakes National Park. Take the Lakes Way scenic drive through rainforest and past picturesque inland lakes. Follow the Manning Valley to Port Macquarie and onwards to Coffs Harbour. You can learn about banana production in the area at ‘The Big Banana’ attraction. Islands off the coast are home to an abundance of birdlife and whales pass by during their migration in May to November.
Hotel – Ramada Resort at Coffs Harbour

Byron Bay

The drive north contains some of the most beautiful landscapes in Australia. The drive follows the coastline to Woolgoolga before turning inland to the elegant town of Grafton, set on the banks of the Clarence River. Visit in spring and you will witness over 2000 Jacaranda trees in bloom. Continue north to the coastal town of Byron Bay known for its bohemian ambiance, beaches and surfing.

Spend the day chilling out in one of the cafes, visit Wategos Beach which attracts surfers from across the globe. Head inland to Byron Bay’s hinterland to World Heritage-listed rainforests, historic towns and alternative lifestyle villages such as Nimbin.

A full day to relax and explore Byron Bay. You may decide to just spend time at the beach or be pampered at the hotel spa, explore the coastline on a sea kayaking excursion or head to a surf school for surfing lessons.

Rise early to witness the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean before you continue your drive north across the New South Wales/Queensland border at Coolangatta. Follow the coastal route along the Gold Coast and through Surfers Paradise, famed for its long sandy beaches, theme parks and inland canals and waterways. Your Pacific Coastal Self-Drive ends when you reach Brisbane, Queensland’s capital city.
Hotel – Sofitel Brisbane

Drop your rental car at the downtown depot and enjoy the remainder of your day exploring Brisbane at your own pace. Cruise along the Brisbane River or stroll through Southbank’s lush parklands and laze on the man-made beach and lagoon pool. Visit the impressive Brisbane Botanical Gardens, try your luck at the Treasury Casino or enjoy a dinner cruise on the Kookaburra Showboat.
Hotel – Sofitel Brisbane

Transfer by private car to Brisbane Airport for your flight back to the UK. Extended stopovers can be arranged to break up your journey back.
