Spend nine nights discovering Tasmania’s history and World Heritage-listed wilderness this our Grand Circle Tour.

Soak up Hobart’s convict history before travelling across the heart of Tasmania to Strahan, the island’s only town on its forbidding west coast. Glide through Gordon Wild Rivers National Park on a relaxing river cruise and visit Sarah Island, a former penal colony from the early 1800’s in Macquarie harbour.

Hike through ancient rainforests and alpine heaths, marvel at the reflection of rugged peaks in glacial lakes at Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Stroll along the deserted white sandy beaches at the Bay of Fires National Park and soak up the spectacular scenery and exquisite beauty of Wineglass Bay on a cruise of Freycinet National Park.

Depart the UK on your flight to Hobart. Several stopover opportunities are available including Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Melbourne.

On arrival in Hobart, you will collect your hire vehicle and make your way to your downtown hotel. Hadley’s Orient Hotel is bursting with character and is a National Trust listed property. The remainder of today is at leisure to visit some of Hobart’s places of interest including the Royal Botanical Gardens and beautiful harbour.


Travel across the heart of Tasmania, to the west coast village of Strahan. The drive is spectacular, with Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park to your left and Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park to your right. Stop in Queenstown and take in the stark mountain views from Spion Kop Lookout. Arrive in the only town on Tasmania’srugged west coast, where you will stay in the boutique Franklin Manor.

Cradle Mountain

You will be transferred to board your scenic flight over the Central Highlands of Tasmania. Marvel at the grand scale of Macquarie Harbour, with some great aerial photo opportunities, before descending to Strahan to join the award-winning Gordon River Cruise to experience this UNESCO World Heritage protected Tasmanian Wilderness Area from the water. Cruise across the picturesque Macquarie Harbour and step ashore at Heritage Landing for a walk through the untamed temperate rainforest of the Franklin–Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Visit the ruins of the former penal colony on Sarah Island. Return to Strahan for the drive to Cradle Mountain National Park.

Cradle Mountain

Spend a full day in the World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. This premier wilderness region offers over 20 self-guided walking tracks ranging from easy 20-minute walks to strenuous nine-hour hiking trails. The Waterfalls Walk is a gentle 40-minute hike along boardwalks to the picturesque Pencil Pine falls and Knyvet Falls and comes highly recommended. Guided walks, fly-fishing, horse-riding and helicopter flights can also be arranged.

Launceston, Tasmania

Today your Tasmania Grand Circle Self-Drive takes you to Launceston. Stop at Mole Creek Karst National Park and explore the impressive underground caverns of Marakoopa and King Solomons Caves. Marakoopa Cave features underground streams with large displays of glow-worms and the magnificent cavern of the Great Cathedral. King Solomons Cave is a dazzling display of stalactites and stalagmites.

St Helens

Drive north-east through some of Tasmania’s richest forest and agricultural country to the bay-side town of St Helens. This fishing port is known as the game fishing capital of Tasmania and famed for its crayfish, flounder and scallops. St Helens is the gateway to the Bay of Fires Coastal Reserve, a dramatically beautiful coastal conservation area of sugar-white sand beaches and clear waters, drive to The Gardens for the best views.

Freycinet National Park

Travel south along Tasmania’s east coast, stopping at Lagoons Beach Conservation Area for a stroll along this scenic stretch of ocean beach before continuing through Coles Bay to Freycinet National Park. Take in mesmerising views of Great Oyster Bay and the Tasman Sea from the lodge or encounter secluded bays and the dramatic coastline on a guided twilight kayaking tour.

Freycinet National Park

Explore Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay on a four-hour eco-catamaran cruise from Coles Bay. Witness the exquisite beauty and serenity of the Freycinet Peninsula while you glide across the crystal-clear waters of Wineglass Bay, nestled under the Hazards Mountain Range. Anchor in the bay for lunch before returning to Coles Bay after a day of enjoying the stunning scenery and abundance of wildlife at Freycinet National Park.

Staying at  Freycinet Lodge

Today you return to Hobart, stopping at one of the wineries near Swansea and historic town of Richmond with its elegant Georgian architecture and heritage buildings. Wander through this charming town, stopping for refreshment at one of the tea shops. Visit Richmond Gaol, a historic site that tells the stories of the men and women that spent time in solitary confinement here in the early 1800’s.

A final morning in Hobart before driving to the airport for your flight back to the UK.
