Travel north and explore the beauty of New Zealand’s North Island.

Start in Auckland and visit the magnificent Bay of Islands, the beaches and forests of the Coromandel Peninsula and cultural Rotorua.

Itinerary

Day 1  Arrival into Auckland

Upon arrival at Auckland Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel.
The rest of the day is your own to relax or explore. Maybe visit Auckland Museum or the Sky Tower, or simply enjoy a meal at one of Auckland’s many restaurants, bars and cafés.

Day 2  Auckland – Bay of Islands (150 miles)

Collect your rental car and travel north past Warkworth and Leigh towards Whangarei. Stop at some of the many forests and surf beaches that you may pass, depending on the route you choose. Surrounded by forested hills, Whangarei is the cultural and commercial heart of Northland and its harbour houses yachts from around the world. Continue to Kawakawa, which has a railway line running down its main street.

Day 3  Bay of Islands

You have a day at leisure today to explore the magnificent Bay of Islands. There are over 144 islands and bays with miles of white sandy beaches. Watersports such as sailing, fishing and swimming with dolphins are popular. Alternatively, visit the Treaty House at Waitangi, where in 1840 the British Government and Maori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi.

Day 4  Bay of Islands – Coromandel Peninsula (236 miles)

Drive over to the west coast through Opononi. Further south on this route is the Waipoua Forest; a reserve of 2,639 hectares of kauri, this is the largest surviving stand of these enormous trees which once covered most of the northern half of North Island. Continue towards the Coromandel Peninsula along the Firth of Thames coast, where the township of Thames provides a reminder of the gold rush which began in 1867.

Day 5  Coromandel Peninsula

A day to relax and enjoy the Coromandel Peninsula. Some of North Island’s best white sand beaches are to be found here. Make your way to Hahei and explore the graceful, natural arch of Cathedral Cove. If the tides are right walk to Hot Water Beach, take a boat trip from Whitianga or just relax and enjoy one of Coromandel’s locally brewed craft beers.

Day 6  Coromandel Peninsula – Rotorua (134 miles)

Travel south past more beautiful beaches and Tauranga, one of North Island’s largest ports. Your route will take you through kiwifruit country, around Te Puke and on to Rotorua, New Zealand’s cultural centre. Rotorua sits in a geothermal valley and is famous for geysers, bubbling mud pools and its sulphurous smell. Visit the Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, where you will also experience a traditional Maori Hangi (dinner).

Day 7  Rotorua

A day at leisure for you to visit Rotorua and its environs. Visit the Rotorua Museum or take a forest walk or mountain bike ride in The Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest. Wander the tree-walk; a suspended walkway combining 21 wooden bridges between ancient redwood trees. If you are feeling more adventurous, there are plenty of other activities on offer, including ziplining, zorbing and rafting.

Day 8  Rotorua – Auckland (146 miles)

Return to Auckland today. On the way, you could take a detour to visit the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a labyrinth of underground caves and rivers where you can see millions of glowworms on the cavern roof. For film enthusiasts, we recommend a stop at Matamata for a guided tour of the Hobbiton film set used in the Lord of the Rings movies.

Day 9  Auckland to UK

Today you will drop off your rental vehicle at Auckland airport in time for your flight back to the UK. Alternatively, speak to a Travel Specialist to extend your holiday to another fascinating part of New Zealand.
