UNESCO World Heritage Cities of Cuba and Beach Fly Drive
A Cuba fly-drive holiday gives you the opportunity to explore and understand the real Cuba. This tailor-made holiday visits four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Havana and Trinidad, both very different from each other. The hectic city of Havana is a mix of decaying 18th century buildings and those that have been painstakingly restored to their former glory. Now housing fine museums and art galleries, some are now also boutique hotels. Follow the turbulent history of this Caribbean island with a visit to the Museum of the Revolution, visit the Plaza de la Revolucion and the Jose Marti monument.
Your journey continues along the deserted motorway towards the south west, where you can divert along the edge of the famous Zapata Swamp, which can be seen from space and is home to many species of birds as well as crocodiles. Stop off for a visit at the museum to learn about the invasion of the Bay of Pigs before taking the road along the south coast to the charming colonial town of Cienfuegos. The following day your short drive brings you to the UNESO World Heritage Site of Trinidad. A fine example of restoration, the main colonial centre is pedestrianised. A visit is like stepping back in time with donkeys and carts trundling along cobbled streets, lovingly cared for plazas, brightly coloured colonial buildings, and old gents sitting and smoking large Cuban cigars.
The area surrounding Trinidad is there to be explored, head for the beach or up in to the Escambray Mountains where you can take one of a number of walking trails to waterfalls. Drive to the Valle de los Ingenios, one of the main sugar cane plantation regions and an area of great historical importance.
Now is time to relax and top up the tan, Cayo Santa Maria is an island of sand that is connected to the north coast of the island by a causeway. Take a brief stop in Santa Clara to visit the museum of Che Guevara before donning your swim suit and enjoying the feeling the soft white sand between your toes.
Your return to Havana will take you via the delightful little town of Remedios and along the deserted motorway. Havana will be your last night stop before your return flight to the UK.
