Drive through cacti filled deserts and marvel at the immense Grand Canyon before taking in a spectacular Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas and enjoying the natural beauty of Yosemite National Park.

Discover the West on our 16-day fly-drive holiday through California, Arizona and Nevada, ticking off several bucket list destinations and attractions along the way.

Los Angeles is the favourite home to many top celebrities and movie stars so always keep a lookout as you may very spot one or two in places such as Beverly Hills, Bel-Air and Malibu. Follow the Southern Californian coastline to San Diego where the pace is a little more relaxed and time is spent on or next to the water. Palm Springs is a desert oasis and offers championship golf courses, award-winning spas and an abundance of shops and eclectic choice of dining. Explore Scottsdale and beyond, where you can experience a truly western adventure and ride horseback through desert landscapes strewn with towering cacti.

Marvel at one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon, over one mile in depth and 277 river miles long, you can enjoy spectacular views from various vantage points along the canyon edge. Next stop is Las Vegas with its bright lights and casinos; themed hotels are built as replicas of iconic sights such as the Eiffel Tower and Pyramids of Giza. Cross back in to California and drive across North America's lowest point in the Death Valley National Park with its ghost towns and colourful rocks, salt flats and sand dunes. Yosemite is situated in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains and is famed for the Half Dome, a granite dome that is the background of many Yosemite's photographs.

Your final stop is San Francisco, where you can visit iconic sights such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street and the notorious former prison of Alcatraz.

Itinerary

Day 1  UK - Los Angeles
On arrival in Los Angeles, pick up your car at the airport and make your way to your hotel.
Day 2  Los Angeles
Stroll down Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive with its exclusive designer shops or along Santa Monica’s seafront and visit its famed pier. If you want to see how Hollywood movies are created, book a VIP Pass to Universal Studios Hollywood for backlot access and exclusive theme park benefits. Check out the schedule at Hollywood Bowl, you might be lucky enough to grab last minute tickets at this famous entertainment amphitheatre.
Day 3  Los Angeles to San Diego (121 miles)
Today drive from Los Angeles to San Diego and en route, visit the San Juan Capistrano Mission, a two hundred year old monument. Take your time to enjoy all that San Diego has to offer including the beaches of La Jolla and the trendy Gaslamp Quarter. Spend a leisurely evening on a dinner cruise around San Diego Harbour.

Day 4  San Diego
There is so much to do in San Diego, from watching whales as they migrate between Alaska and Baja California (Gray Whales Mid December – April and Blue Whales Mid-June – September) to exploring the area’s craft breweries. Body surf at one of the city beaches or take the 59-Mile Scenic Drive through charming neighbourhoods and stunning coastline. Head to Balboa Park where there are 15 museums and beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival architecture.

Day 5  San Diego to Palm Springs (172 miles)
Continue your journey and drive to the desert oasis of Palm Springs. Here, take the aerial tramway, the world’s largest rotating tramcar, to the top of San Jacinto Mountain or if you have time, journey outside of the city to Joshua Tree National Park. Palm Springs meanwhile is bursting with shops, spas and golf courses.
Day 6  Palm Springs to Scottsdale (267 miles)
From Palm Springs you’ll travel past the Coachelle Valley where many dried fruits are grown and then into Phoenix and Scottsdale. Scottsdale, like Palm Springs, is bursting with high-end resorts, many golf courses and luxury shopping outlets.
Day 7  Scottsdale
Scottsdale is an outdoor adventure playground, there are so many ways to explore and discover this western wilderness. Take an Off-Road Segway Tour in the Sonoran Desert or explore on foot, mountain bike or horseback. Kayak or take a gentle rafting tour down the Lower Salt River or just enjoy a day of being pampered the hotel spa or play a round of golf on the Championship Gainey Ranch Golf Club.
Day 8  Scottsdale to Grand Canyon National Park (235 miles)
Drive on the Black Canyon Highway where you can stop off and visit Montezuma’s Castle, one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America. On this drive, you can also stop off at the red rock town of Sedona before driving through Oak Creek Canyon, with its colourful rock structures, before arriving at the Grand Canyon National Park.
Day 9  Grand Canyon to Las Vegas (278 miles)
Rise early to watch the sunrise over the canyon, and watch the everchanging colours of the rock as the sun gets higher in the sky. There are several vantage points along Desert View Drive including Grandview, Moran and Lipan Point or hike along the Rim Trail for spectacular views from Mather Point or Yavapai Point. For a bird’s eye view, take to the skies on am optional Maverick Helicopter flight.

Day 10  Las Vegas
Las Vegas is known as the entertainment capital of the world, and the city that never sleeps. Las Vegas is home to several casinos, fine dining, exclusive nightclubs, outdoor adventures, high-end shopping and world-class shows that have included David Copperfield, Matt Goss and the eight spectacular Cirque-du-Soleil shows that are resident in Las Vegas year-round.

Day 11  Las Vegas to Death Valley (139 miles)
Leave Las Vegas and cross the border back in to California and in to the Death Valley National Park. Stop at Zabriskie Point for spectacular views of the eroded landscape and Golden Canyon cliffs. Drive to Badwater Basin, the park's lowest point at 282 feet below sea level
Day 12  Death Valley to Yosemite National Park (326 miles)
Depart early and stop at Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, arriving just before sunrise so you can witness the incredible show of colour as the sun climbs higher in the sky, making for incredible photo opportunities. Drive through the high Sierra Nevada Mountains and Tioga Pass where you enter Yosemite National Park (if you are travelling from early November to late May this pass may be shut, if so, there are longer alternative routes).
Day 13  Yosemite National Park
Enjoy a full day discovering Yosemite National Park, famed for its granite monoliths, El Captain, popular with extreme climbers and base jumpers and Half Dome, a rock formation that rises 4,737 feet above the valley floor. Valleys are filled with giant sequoia trees and where waterfalls plunge down towering walls of rock, Yosemite Falls and Bridalveil Falls are two of the most impressive.
Day 14  Yosemite National Park to San Francisco (206 miles)
Today drive to your final destination, San Francisco, known for iconic sights and attractions such as the Golden Gate Bridge, cables cars that trundle through downtown and transport you along up and down the city's steep hills.
Day 15  San Francisco
Spend time exploring San Francisco where highlights may include Alcatraz Island, Fisherman’s Wharf and the shopping area of Union Square. Included in your holiday is a 48 hop on hop off bus tour with Alcatraz admission.
Day 16  San Francisco - UK
Drive to airport to return your rental vehicle in time for your flights back to the UK.
