Discover the highlights of San Francisco on the Hop-on Hop-off bus taking in Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf and Chinatown plus many more. Take a self-guided tour around of Alcatraz, the infamous formal federal penitentiary with a list of notorious inmates such as Mickey Cohen, Robert Stroud and Al Capone. Take to the road and head north to the hillside vineyards of Napa Valley, renowned for some of California's finest wines and gourmet dining. Enjoy outdoor life and spectacular natural beauty of Yosemite National Park. Filled with ancient giant sequoia trees, plunging waterfalls and massive granite formations such as El Captain. Carmel-by-the-Sea is as quaint as can be, with picture postcard cottages, upscale boutiques and galleries and a whole host of pavement cafes and gourmet dining. 

Itinerary

Day 1  San Francisco
Fly into San Francisco and explore this city with its hills, trams and varied neighbourhoods. Highlights include the Golden Gate Bridge and the island of Alcatraz accessed by ferry on which the deserted prison stands. Worth experiencing are the trams and the view from Alamo Square Park. Enjoy a seafood dinner at Fisherman’s Wharf, shop in Nob Hill or Union Square and visit the Presidio, a former military post, in the Golden Gate area. Included in your holiday is a 48-hour Hop-On Hop-Of Bus.
Day 2  San Francisco
Your ‘All Loops Hop-On Hop-Off’ bus ticket is valid for 72 hours from the time you step on your first bus, this is an effortless way to explore San Francisco. There are four routes taking you to iconic sights such as Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf and across the water to the delightful waterfront town of Sausalito. Your ticket also includes a return ferry and self-guided tour of the notorious Alcatraz Prison.
Day 3  San Francisco to Napa Valley (47 miles)
This morning pick up your rental car from a downtown location in San Francisco and drive approximately one and a half hours to Napa Valley. Known as the principal wine growing region of the United States, Napa Valley is home to over 200 wineries. Perhaps take a tour of one of the well-known wineries such as, Mondavi and Beringer, play golf in one of the ten courses or go on a hot air balloon to enjoy breathtaking views.
Day 4  Napa Valley
Spend a full day in this beautiful area of California, take a private wine tasting tour or board the historic Napa Valley Wine Train for a gourmet lunch and wine tasting experience. A wonderful way to explore the valley is by bicycle, so pick up one of the complimentary bikes at Carneros and explore the region at your own pace.

Day 5  Napa Valley to Yosemite National Park (226 miles)
Drive southeast to Yosemite National Park where you will spend two nights exploring this spectacular natural wilderness. Take time to stop in the town of Mariposa, a former Gold Rush town, a stroll up the historic Main Street conjures up visions of the Old West. A visit to the small but interesting Mariposa Museum & History Center gives you an insight of what life was like in the Gold Rush era.

Day 6  Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park offers awe-inspiring vistas, spectacular waterfalls and an abundance of outdoor activities throughout all four seasons. Hike, bike, climb or explore the national park on horseback. You can pan for gold or zip line through the treetops. Take a wildlife tour in search of Black Bear and Mountain Lions or spend a day with a Yosemite Conservancy Naturalist learning more about the parks flora and fauna.

Day 7  Yosemite to Carmel-by-the-Sea (210 miles)
Drive onto the beautiful seaside village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, a favourite holiday spot for celebrities and well-to-do Californians. The picture postcard tree lined streets offer a vast choice of boutiques, galleries, pavement cafes and fabulous restaurants.

Day 8  Carmel-by-the Sea and Monterey
Carmel and Monterey are only five miles away from each other. Monterey is famed for its attractive Fisherman’s Wharf where you can enjoy clam chowder and take boat trips out into the bay in search of marine life including sea otters, dolphins and whales. Alternatively drive south along one of the world’s most beautiful coastal roads, the Big Sur.

Day 9  Carmel to San Francisco (118 miles)
Spend the day in Carmel-by-the-Sea or Monterey and then drive north back to San Francisco for your flight back to the UK. If time permits we recommend stopping at the seaside towns of Capitola and Santa Cruz on your way to San Francisco Airport.
